New York Fashion Week embodies New York style, and this year the hairstylists of the week showcased their love for some ‘Big Apple’ hair. New York women are modern, chic and always look effortless. The hairstyles on the runway this season were just that. Guido Paulo from Redken created looks that embodied the “New York sensibility” of hair: cool and nonchalant.
A big style on the runway this season was the ponytail; Guido created styles for Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Ports 1961. All were simple but cool at the same time. At Ralph Lauren, the ponytail was classic: low slung, brushed back with no discernible part, and a bit of curl at the ends. At Calvin Klein, the ponytail was full of texture at the top with a roughed up tail. And at Ports 1961 (also pictured above), the middle parted, low-slung tail had strategic pieces free-framing the face and the rest tucked into the beautiful necklines of the clothing. The key to the ponytail look this season is placing the ponytail low on the nape of the neck. It can be done with either natural texture or a straight blowout, but should look effortless as all the styles on the runway looked just that.
Models at Reed Krakoff, Altuzarra and Victoria Beckham walked down the runway with their hair down and sleek. The beauty of the styles had a modern feel and to Guido they were, “not complicated, but…simple beauty.” At Victoria Beckham, the hair was cut blunt at the ends and styled straight and sleek with a deep side part. While at Reed Krakoff and Altuzarra, the hair was natural with a bit of texture running through the ends. It was as if these girls let their hair air dry to a simple, shine-free finish.
These styles are also easy to achieve. If you want the look from Victoria Beckham, flat iron your hair, part it deep on one side and use any shine product to create a sleek finish. The look at Reed Krakoff and Altuzarra is a bit easier. Either work with your natural texture or start by blow drying your hair to a smooth finish. Then, add some texture to the bottom. A great tip to add simple texture: while your hair is still a bit hot from blow drying, twist the bottom half into a chignon; secure low on the neck and leave for a while; when you undo the chignon your hair should have a simple wave. This is the perfect texture for the look!
This season, the artists backstage created styles to complement the intricacies of the clothes that reflected the modern, minimalist, cool vibe of the New York City woman. The best thing about these styles is that they are not only versatile but were also simple. Any women can achieve these looks and they work for any occasion.
