Seen on the hottest models and celebs, the balayage hair trend is here to stay. Balayage, the French word meaning “to sweep or to paint” uses a precise technique to transform hair, leaving you with beautifully highlighted tips. Spring and summer are the best seasons to change up your look. So why not give this look a try? Balayage offers a softer, more relaxed style for the season.
We spoke to celebrity hairstylist Devin Toth of NYC’s Salon SCK and San Francisco master colorist Samera of Samitra Salon to share with us the tips and tricks to achieving the balayage hairstyle.
Fellow stylist Heather Lee at Salon SCK combined both the balayage and ombré techniques in order to create what is known as Sombré – soft ombré.
Step 1: Heather painted balayage highlights onto the hair.
Step 2: She added brighter ombré pops of color on the ends for a more dramatic effect. So, basically this hair color has the softness of balayage at the roots to the midshaft; however it also has the dramatic contrast at the ends created by the ombré in the foils. The client started with hair that has been colored black for years!
Step 3: Devin gave the client a soft long layered haircut and then styled her with some waves and finished it with Kerastase Laque Couture medium hold anti-frizz hairstyling spray for hair to be long lasting but still touchable.
Samera of Samitra Salon, creates this natural, illustrious look with her balayage expertise.
Her sweeping brush strokes of lighter color transform flat hair into a brighter, more textured aesthetic. The technique is a personalized approach to highlighting, selecting the most flattering shade for each client’s skin tone. The color is then applied to the hair’s surface and emphasized at the tips, hiding signs of regrowth and eliminating the need for frequent maintenance.
Ranging from $150 to $175+, Samitra Salon offers partial and full balayage coloring services.
