Frugalista Friday: Organic Beauty Finds on a Budget

These days, it seems like everyone is counting his or her pennies. Whether it is the annual summer vacation or ice cream after a day at the beach, people are looking for the biggest bang for their buck. And who can blame them? With the unemployment number up and companies going under left and right, it’s hard not to cut everything pleasurable out of one’s personal budget.

However, it is so important to continue to treat your skin and overall being with care and attention. The same mindset goes for personal care products, especially organic beauty (oh no she didn’t!). That’s right, I am here to tell you that you don’t have to give up your organic goodies just because your watching costs. Organic beauty is possible, even on a tight budget.

Like many budgets, organic beauty budgets will require self-discipline and dedication. You need to stick to your budget for beauty products and with very few exceptions, not stray away from your allotted amount to spend.

Once you have your organic beauty budget dollar figure, go online and begin reading product reviews. This is a great way to get a better understanding of what a product promises and to read how others view the results. With the summer sun upon us, all I hear about is how toxic sunscreen is. So, in my quest to find a safe, effective alternative, I went online and began reading reviews of organic sunscreens. I saw that Burt’s Bees Chemical –Free Sunscreen with hemp seed oil in SPF 30 was a good value of $10.95 for a 3.5 fl oz bottle at Amazon.com. Then I went to makeupalley.com and read the reviews. More often than not, I read how disappointed people were. They said it smelled awful, crumbled in hand, and was hard to apply. Not the type of natural sunscreen I am looking for, even on a cloudy day! So I just saved myself $10.95 and a bad beach experience. Instead I fell in love with Earth’s Best Sun Block SPF 30 4oz chemical free bottle. For just $9 at amazon.com, I can have great sun coverage, enough product to last me through the summer, and stay out of the way of cancer causing ingredients. Not to mention the reviews were quite positive, too!

Now that you’ve read reviews about the organic beauty products you are interested in purchasing, you need to keep an eye out for bulk items at lower prices. I love that I can get a 16 oz bottle of 365 Everyday Value Premium Body Care Body Lotion in Lavender Blend for just $2.99. This Whole Foods staple smells amazing and leaves your skin incredibly smooth. Talk about quantity without skimping out on quality!

Finally, don’t get lazy when you get to the beauty isle. It is so easy to run to the local big box store, grab a bottle of cheap shower gel and call it a day. But add up all those cheap, toxic gels and you could have purchased one or two healthy, organic gels and stayed within your budget without doing harm to your beautiful bod. I did that when I stopped purchasing smells-like-teen-spirit shower gels and purchased one natural 12 fl oz bottle of Naturally Nourishing Milk and Shea Butter Body Wash for a low $8 at burtsbees.com. This oh-so-creamy body treat is made with safflower seed oleosomes to naturally increase moisture in the skin. For just $8, bring on soft skin and bye bye dry, flakey skin!

Dorothy Parker once said, “Take care of the luxuries and the necessities will take care of themselves.” Organic beauty may sound like it will break the bank, but remember, talk is cheap. Organic beauty is a lifestyle, one with such positive rewards that will pay off in the long run. This summer, remember to stick to your organic beauty budget and to purchase products that not only are easy on the wallet, but deliver results worthy of your beautiful skin.
