What do you love about curls?

SS: I love curls because they cannot be controlled. You can coax, you can use products and you can beg them to behave, but in the end you must give up the control and accept them for what they are.

Why do you think so many curly haired people straighten their curls?

SS: In my opinion, most children are not given an opportunity to love the head of hair given to them. If your parent did not have curly hair, the education on how to manipulate the curl and make it into something beautiful never happened.

One of my favorite questions to ask my curly haired clients is, “At what age did you accept your curls?”

What are some tips for achieving beautiful curls?

SS: The best tip I can give is a combination of products. As curly hair undulates, small cracks and crevices develop. If those cracks and crevices are not properly moisturized, they can increase in size and an uninformed curl pattern develops.

So, add moisture and then a product such as Oribe Curl Shaping Mousse ($36.00) that is light enough to penetrate deep into the cracks and crevices to encourage the undulation (I love that word). Moisture plus hold equals beautiful curls.

Which current celebrities have enviable curls?

SJ: Solange Knowles, Nicole Kidman, Taylor Swift and Sarah Jessica Parker.

What are some tips for achieving beautiful curls?

SJ: I would achieve a natural, beachy look by using Oribe Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray ($37.00). For something with hold and shine, I would use Oribe Crème for Style ($35.00). And for definition and bounce, I would use the new Oribe Curl Shaping Mousse.

AnnaLynne McCord

How can women with curls embrace color trends? (Answered by colorist Katie Casey from Harper Paige)

KC: Women are not only embracing looser looks, but they are experimenting with color. Ombré and other variant color themes are trends that don’t seem to be yielding anytime soon. They work as a nice complement to the lower maintenance, natural looks we are seeing. Beachy and effortless are where it’s at!!

Curls seem to have made a big comeback in fashion editorials and on red carpets over the past few years. Have you noticed this with your clients?

LS: Yes, curls have made a comeback! I have clients who, instead of coming in for a blowout before an event, come in and ask me to set their curls.

I mix Oribe Gel Sérum Radiance, Magic and Hold ($58.00) and Oribe Curl by Definition Créme ($48.00; my favorite concoction) in a bowl and use my fingers and a comb to define half-inch to one inch sections. I have them sit under a hood dryer until the hair is dry and then gently separate. It’s a big hit.

Also, people love versatility, so I cut curly hair in a way that will look amazing curly as well as straight; this makes women comfortable warming up to a natural curly style knowing they have options.

I think educating clients about how to deal with their curls has been key in more women embracing their curls. For busy women (which most of us are), the key is having the ease of letting hair dry curly with product to make hair look polished on the go.

Sarah Jessica Parker

Who has the most iconic curls in history?

LS: There are so many icons with curly hair in every era, from Shirley Temple to Donna Summer, but I think the most iconic is Sarah Jessica Parker. She has gone from a short crop to long curls…with hats, hair accessories, updos, down dos…always fearlessly changing her style and embracing her natural curl. She is a true icon.

What are some tips for achieving beautiful curls?

Moisture moisture moisture! Shampoo less, condition more. Curly hair tends to be naturally drier, so it’s essential to use the right shampoo and conditioner, such as Oribe Moisture & Control Shampoo ($38.00) and Conditioner ($39.00) for coarse curls and Oribe Ultra Gentle Shampooand Conditioner ($27.00 each) for finer curls.

A quenched canvas is key to a better curly style. You can then add leave-in moisturizer like Oribe Foundation Mist ($23.00) and styling products to achieve a more customized look.

After thoroughly saturating locks with a creamy product like Oribe Curl by Definition Créme, you can then twist and roll one-inch bunches with your fingers and pin them up with small clips, letting them dry naturally or using a diffuser to set and help define the curl. This also helps distribute the volume more evenly.

Top off with Oribe Imperméable Anti-Humidity Spray ($39.00) to block out humidity. I have also been loving Oribe Fiber Groom Elastic Texture Paste ($29.00); I use it between my fingers for extra separation and elasticity, and it can act as kind of a curl refresher if you feel like you are starting to get fuzzy.

For those who have a few stray pieces that don’t seem to curl as nicely as the rest — usually frustrating to curly girls — I recommend going over those few pieces with a curling iron to make the curl look more consistent.

What do you love most about curls?

IC: I love how there are different types of curls, so I’m always being challenged. It’s never boring! To me, curls are sexy. They make a great accessory to an outfit. Some say, “Blondes have more fun.”

What are some tips for achieving beautiful curls?

IC: Consult with your hairstylist and listen to him or her. We are your hair doctors, and we care about your hair. You don’t have to use five products a day; having curly hair can be low maintenance. Try to use a T-shirt to dry your hair instead of a towel. It will help with the frizz. Amen!

Why do you think so many curly haired people straighten their curls?

MK: I think it basically comes down to a lack of education on their stylist’s part. Stylists are quick to show clients how to straighten their hair, but very few will educate their clients on how to work WITH their natural texture as opposed to fighting it.

What are some tips for achieving beautiful curls?

MK: Apply proper products such as Oribe Crème for Style or Curl by Definition Créme when hair is still damp. Set your curls in place and either air-dry or diffuse; once dry, leave it be!
