Get ready this Spring with some fun, innovative and refreshing new hair looks! Right off the Spring/Summer ’13 runways, Redken’s hairstylist and creative consultant Guido sat down with us to dish on the latest hair trends. BeautyStat’s very own Evelyn Lugo got all the details on how to recreate these hair looks at home.

Four of the hottest hair looks for Spring 2013 are categorized as Modern Minimalist (low ponytails with texture), Factory Girl (60s-inspired hair looks), Deep Impact (super-deep side parts) and Double Vision (having your tresses rock two different textures at once!). With all of these new, fresh hair looks, which one will you be trying out?

Guido couldn’t get enough of Evelyn’s curls!

“This season, designers wanted to achieve different textures and really push the artistic boundaries of hair. I really relied on my go-to Redken products to create the specific looks they wanted. There were a lot of references to the mid-90s, when minimalism came into fashion, and also the 60s. It was about attitude and technique—nothing was left to chance.”

Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Modern Minimalist

Simplicity took a starring role this season with low ponytails, clean parts and naturally enhanced texture. It’s minimal effort with maximum style.

TIPS:

At Jil Sander, Guido reinvented straight hair with modern sensibility and precise details.

First, he blow-dried hair with Satinwear 02 Ultimate Blow-Dry Lotion, made a super-clean center part and then flat-ironed hair.

Next, he gathered hair into a low ponytail (draping it over the ears), dropping the elastic down an inch to create a relaxed silhouette. The finishing touch: Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist for all-over polish.

Guido talking about all things hair!

A departure from the Versace norm, the hair at this season’s show was luxuriously laid-back—perfect for those who want an effortless look.

Start by applying Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam to damp hair, then roughly blow-dry (skip the brush and use your fingers to scrunch hair instead). When hair’s dry, twist into a bun and mist with Powder Refresh 01 aerosol hair powder/dry shampoo. Let your bun set for a few minutes, then undo it and spray on more powder refresh 01—you’ll have loose waves with natural texture.

Roberto Cavalli

The luxurious Roberto Cavalli collection was balanced by simple, slightly disheveled hair.

Get the look by smoothing Outshine 01 Anti-Frizz Polishing Milk on damp hair then doing a rough blow-dry. Part hair in the center and mist on Wax Blast 10 High Impact Finishing Spray-Wax to enhance texture, and tuck hair behind the ears.

Factory Girls

Marc Jacobs

When it comes to this season’s 1960s-inspired shapes, the difference is in the details. It’s the 60s like you’ve never seen them before.

TIPS:

With Warhol muse Edie Sedgwick as his inspiration, Guido created a show-stopping look for Marc Jacobs that merged Studio 54 with NYC street style.

First, he applied Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam to damp hair and blow-dried straight, then created a deep side part and misted Quick Tease 15 backcombing finishing spray on the roots to add height with a teased effect. To finish, he gathered hair into a low ponytail, sprayed on Powder Refresh 01 aerosol hair powder/dry shampoo and pulled out a few wisps so the style didn’t look too “done.”

Dreaming of the Italian Riviera? Don’t miss the hair from this season’s Dolce & Gabbana show. “It’s all about how a Sicilian woman in the 1960s would just quickly pin her hair up and tie on a scarf,” says Guido.

To get the look, apply Aerate 08 Bodifying Cream-Mousse from roots to ends, blow-dry hair straight back (don’t create a part), then tie on a silk scarf. Pin hair into an updo—and don’t stress about making it perfect. Bella.

Marc Jacobs

At first glance, you wouldn’t know the faux pixie Guido created for Prada was actually a French twist. “Miuccia wanted to break the mold, so we incorporated the idea of the woman being a little bit boyish,” says Guido.

He applied Thickening Lotion 06 Body Builder and rough-dried hair, then sprayed on Quick Tease 15 backcombing finishing spray (concentrating on the roots). Next he gathered hair into a French twist, but instead of tucking the ends in, he arranged them over the forehead to look like bangs. A generous mist of Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray finished off the look.

Deep Impact

Calvin Klein

Where to draw the line? On the side. This season’s super-deep side parts brought a modern graphic element to otherwise simple styles.

TIPS:

“Super chic, super urban and a little bit grungy” are the hallmarks of this season’s Calvin Klein hairstyle.

Guido started by applying Full Frame 07 Protective Volumizing Mousse to damp hair, then rough blow-dried to retain hair’s natural texture. Next, he created a deep side part and applied Powder Grip 03 mattifying hair powder for an unrefined finish.

Diesel

Sometimes, less is more. That defined the look at Diesel, where Guido created a style that was “perfectly executed in a polished way.”

Get the look by blow-drying with Extreme Anti-Snap leave-in treatment, creating a deep side part, then flat-ironing hair for a perfectly straight look. Tame any flyaways with a light mist of Fashion Work 12 Versatile Working Spray, then layer on Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist for a healthy, glossy finish.

Free-flowing hair was the order of the day at Lanvin.

Guido rough blow-dried hair with Duo Shield 07 Color Protecting Gel-Cream, then created a deep side part. Next he clipped hair back on the side to set and sprayed on Quick Dry 18 Instant Finishing Spray. Hair was unclipped just before models walked the runway.

Double Vision

Rag + Bone

Combining textures and finishes works for clothes, and it works equally well for hair. This season’s split personality styles will have you doubling up on glam.

TIPS:

“Strong and dramatic, but still very youthful and American,” was how Guido described the look at Victoria Beckham.

To create the two contrasting textures, he blow-dried the top section of the hair to just behind the ears then sprayed on Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray for maximum control. Next step: a generous mist of Powder Refresh 01 aerosol hair powder/dry shampoo to create an airy, texturized effect on hair’s lengths.

Rag + Bone

At Rag + Bone, Guido created a look that combined multiple elements. “It’s a style that’s masculine yet feminine, soft yet tough,” he says.

Apply Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam to damp hair, rough blow-dry, then slightly curl the bottom half of the hair with a large-barrel curling iron. Next, slick the front section back with Hardwear 16 Super Strong Gel, then blow-dry the top section of the hair back to just behind the ears. Finish with a generous amount of Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray for ultimate control.

The updated ponytail at Alexander Wang combined tough and chic.

To create it, Guido blow-dried hair with All Soft Argan-6 Oil and created a tight-to-the-head ponytail. He curled the tail with a conical curling iron, then sprayed on Fashion Work 12 Versatile Working Spray for texture and flexible control. On the runway, Guido added a strip of tape down the center part to add another dimension to the look.
