When it comes to our makeup application, applying mascara has always been the quintessential finishing touch. But, it can sometimes be tricky to get those pesky bottom lashes evenly coated without flaking, smearing or fading.

We talked with BeautyStat’s very own Erin Sutera and celebrity makeup artist Bruce Grayson, to give us some prime tips to keeping our bottom lashes looking clump-free and gorgeous!

Giving your bottom lashes a coat of mascara is key: “Top and bottom really open up the eye,” says BeautyStat senior writer and makeup artist Erin Sutera. “But if someone has a darker skintone, it can have the opposite effect. In that case I do a soft defining liner underneath.”

It is important to help keep your bottom lashes from smearing by focusing on the skin underneath the eye area. Erin advises to “always set concealer with a light touch of powder. Or, if I’m in a rush, I use a business card to avoid getting dots everywhere.

Some of Erin’s favorite products to use for this is the Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder ($22.00). “ works great, and diffuses any lines around the eye.”

“Use a mascara fan brush and dip the tip of the brush into your mascara applicator. Wipe off the excess and then, starting at the root, apply mascara only halfway down the lash (stop where the lashes rise from the root), not carrying to the tips.”

“Only the tips of the lashes come in contact with under eye skin. Applying mascara halfway down the bottom lashes reduces the chance of mascara transfer, while giving bottom lashes gorgeous definition!”

“I like using a jagged tip mascara brush like the one pictured below.”

“I also like using a clump-free mascara formula, which makes painting lower lashes easy. Try CoverGirl Clump Crusher LashBlast Mascara ($6.99) — the formula adds volume and definition while reducing the likelihood of clumping.”

Bottom Lash Technique

Look slightly down into a hand mirror to give a better perspective of lower lashes. Hold fan brush 3/4 of the way down the handle, between thumb and index finger. Barely touching the lower lashes with the brush, apply mascara.
