Mineral cosmetics are a big deal in the beauty industry these days, and many companies are working their hardest to provide mineral-based products that will suit the needs of their consumers. Gabriel Cosmetics has taken part in this revolution by including eye and lip primers as a part of their April 2013 Gabriel Color line.

The Eye Primer ($13.55) is said to be soft, smooth and creamy with a formula that evens the skintone and makes the eyelid a blank canvas to prep for the color you apply. The formula is made to glide on easily, drying to a matte finish and creating a longer lasting, crease-proof eyeshadow.

The Lip Primer ($13.55) was developed to create a smooth surface to work with, define and prime the lips to allow for long-lasting color that will not fade or feather. These primers are joining a full line of all-natural, vegan-, gluten- and cruelty-free pressed mineral cosmetics and was designed to bring out your natural beauty while revitalizing the skin and providing a classic and sophisticated look.

My Thoughts:

I have been using these primers (Eye and Lip) for just about a month. Let me start off by saying that the packaging is quite traditional, but still allows for easy and useful storage. I enjoy that the packaging is black, which gives it a very sleek look.

A twist-off cap also allows you to use the product and store it away without any issues or mess. Both products are creamy – just as the company states, and are very easy-to-apply, either using your hands (which are some of the best tools you are equipped with) or a synthetic brush.

The Eye Primer:

While a little goes a long way — and you need very little for the results you may be after – I think that it is a pretty fair cost for the amount you receive. The Eye Primer is a neutral/skin-toned shade, which is a bit brighter than my actual skin color.

However, because of its brighter hue on my skin, it allows me to apply brighter colors for a bolder/brighter look, without packing on the primer or base as I would with other cream bases. I LOVE that this primer is two-in-one, allowing me to not only prime my eyelids for lasting color, but also providing a base for use with loose eyeshadows or pressed eyeshadows — without applying a cream shadow to do so.

I used my ring finger to lightly apply the primer to my eye, slightly blending the product and then applying my shadow for an effortless look. I particularly loved how it brought out shades that I would have needed to use with a white base, i.e. yellows and pinks.

The primer’s lasting power was phenomenal. Living here in Hawaii, some eye primers will start to crease within a few hours, and if that is not the problem, then my eyeshadow colors will start to fade.

I have used this primer several times in humid conditions, and I am proud to say that it lasted 8-10 hours without touch-ups and very little fading. The parts of my eyeshadow that did fade was still very visible hours later. I definitely believe this primer compares to many of the high-end primers I have used and I’m truly impressed.

I have tried it with both high-end cosmetic shadows and drugstore brands, and have noticed the same awesome results. While I did use my fingers to apply the product a majority of the time, I want to note that it applies well and evenly with a synthetic brush, too. At this time, the Eye Primer is only available in the pot, but honestly, I think that makes for easy use and great storage in my opinion.

The Lip Primer:

I am a huge lipstick wearer and do not often use. In the past – I have tried many that cause my lips to crack and just become dry and irritable because I have such sensitive skin. After first applying this lip primer, I was super impressed by how easy it was to apply and the fact that my lips did not feel dry or like they were about to start cracking.

Just like the Eye Primer, the Lip Primer comes in the same type of container – a black pot with a twist-off cap. Applying the Lip Primer was just as easy as the eye primer. I used my ring finger to slowly dab the product onto my lips and slightly blended it to create a smooth surface for my favorite lip products. Applying my favorite lipstick was a breeze — it glided on effortlessly and was very vibrant and bright thanks to the shade of the primer.

Just like the Eye Primer, the Lip Primer is a neutral/skin-toned shade, but since my lips have a pink shade to them, it was a great canvas for applying my brighter colors. If you have pink lips and want to apply a muted color or red lip shade, this primer is definitely a great asset to have on hand.

I drink a lot of fluids through the day, so the primer and lip color did not last very long for me. If I wanted to keep that lip color bright and bold through the day, I would probably have to reapply the primer a few times a day.

My lipstick did not experience any feathering — and I used red lipstick on one of the days trying out the primer. I didn’t notice any dryness that other primers have left my lips feeling, and I also noticed that it did not create lines in my lips while wearing lip color.

Considering it did not last the entire day (mainly because I drink and eat several times a day), the product itself definitely did its job creating a smooth, blank surface to accept lip color. Considering the costs and the benefits of using cosmetics from a mineral/natural company, I am very impressed with the products themselves. I would definitely keep using the Eye Primer and Lip Primer!

I work on a lot of brides that require long-lasting staying power for their eye makeup, as well as their lip products and I know that these two items will be very beneficial for that very purpose. You can visit Gabriel Cosmetics and their full line of cosmetics at www.gabrielcosmeticsinc.com.
