Makeup Review, Swatches: Essie Repstyle Magnetic Nail Polish Collection

Meeting Essie Weingarten, founder of Essie, back in September was a real treat for me — we got along beautifully. There was a time that I remember only seeing Essie‘s polishes in most salons and spas, and have always admired her clean ad campaigns and the catchy names of her polishes.

Since being bought by L’Oréal a few years back, I had hoped the company would keep Essie polishes as they were… and, sure enough, they did! The brand Essie is still everywhere I go and her campaigns are as witty as ever.

This was the first time Essie created magnetic polishes, and I first noticed them while flipping through my daughter’s Teen Vogue. Then, I went to Bed, Bath & Beyond one day and saw them in person — I got so excited (only reviewed five out of six)! They all make a reptilian pattern; the color choices offer something for everyone.

It’s called the Repstyle Collection ($11.25) and it is in fact Essie‘s first-ever magnetic collection. Snake patterns were seen all over the runways, having other nail wraps on my fingers with reptile prints (Sally Hansen Salon Effects created ones such as Venon Vixen, Hiss-terical, Brattlesnake and more).

“I am in love with all of the exotic skins that we see slithering down the runways these days. While creating this collection, it dawned on me that it would be a fabulous opportunity to feature the incredible new magnetic technology in a way that is ultra-modern, smart and sexy,” says Essie Weingarten , founder and global creative director.

Nails Inc. also came out with magnetic nails that were to look like fishnet stockings, and I do believe I was one of the first to try their original wave-like pattern when it launched at Sephora. Allure had mentioned it months earlier, so I knew that technology was going to come into the nail market.

Sally Hansen came out with it, too; I have seen many other companies do their own take on magnetic polish. I am waiting for magnetic initials, as that is something that could hit a lot of target audiences. When a step and repeat pattern is done, they might look quite interesting and abstract. Better go call Essie, she might like the idea!

The Repstyle Collection includes the following colors:

Crocadilly – Hunter green
Snake, rattle and roll – Venomous, oxidized silver
Repstyle – Hypnotic desert bronze
Snake It Up – Pewter pavé python
Lil’ Boa Peep – Copperhead titanium
Sssssexy – Striking, scintillating sanguine

Essie’s Tip: If you want a more prim look, keep the magnets facing the same direction for every nail. If you are feeling more adventurous, mix up the magnets’ direction so that the pattern appears different from one nail to the next.
