I’ve long heard of the Guerlain Météorites Perles Illuminating Powder as one of those coveted, must-have beauty products that only those “in the know” can appreciate, but I never understood all the hype. Clearly I wasn’t “in the know” enough, because as far as I could tell, it was just a pretty-looking jar of powdery pearls; nothing more than a display object. I couldn’t understand how so many different colored balls would look flattering on the face (I try to banish sickly green undertones and sallow yellow shades — not embrace them), and that’s not to mention wrapping my head around how the shimmery finish could look anything but juvenile on the skin. Boy, was I misinformed.
I did get one part right: it’d be a sin to hide the glamorous, silver packaging in the dregs of your makeup bag. The polished, ribbed jar with its rainbow flower lid is practically begging to shine atop a feminine vanity. Thankfully, that’s where my accuracies end.
Guerlain Météorites Perles Illuminating Powder ($58) can be used as a highlighter or a finishing powder that imparts a luminosity to skin. A throng of six multicolored pearls are nestled inside the charming pot. Teint Rosé 01 includes green meteorites to reduce redness; pink to even out the complexion; white for highlighting; gold for warmth; champagne for a softened glow and purple for neutralizing sallowness.
It comes with a powder puff that’s meant to minimize pearl movement and is not to be used as an applicator (don’t worry, I made this mistake when I first starting using it too). You need to swirl a makeup brush onto the pearls to allow them to give off their powder. Be sure to keep the powder puff in the jar at all times though, because this product is exponentially messy once the balls are broken. When this happens, a cloud of powder escapes from the pot every time you close it (and it’s a shame to let such a pricey product escape unused).
The météorites have a floral scent that I find rather stuffy and doesn’t at all reflect this product’s youthful effects. Instead, skin is left with a diffused candlelit glow. It radiates. It lifts flat skin revealing a fresher look. It imparts the subtlest hint of sparkle that is only visible on the highest points of the face (see cheekbones, nose, etc.) and doesn’t look at all juvenile as I suspected.
It’s for this reason that I think it’s underutilized as just a highlighter. I want my whole body covered in this stuff, not just my cheeks. But be aware that it doesn’t provide any coverage, which is why it’s meant as a skin finisher, not a foundation. And though Teint Rosé 01 is meant for cool, light complexions, the results are so muted that I couldn’t imagine it not working on any skin tone.
Overall, I’ll admit this product is a luxury to most at this price point. But with so many pearls and so little used at a time, it’ll last for quite a while. So is it worth it? A resounding, Yes! There’s a reason why this is a rather glowing review (and it just doesn’t have to do with the way it leaves your skin).
