The new Kate Somerville Daily Deflector Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 Anti-Aging Sunscreen ($48.00) is a lightweight, creamy formula that claims to do triple duty, “providing intense hydration, UV protection, and anti-aging benefits.” Additionally, a cutting-edge delivery system is supposed to ensure “that the sunscreen stays in a reservoir on the surface of the skin — where it is most effective — and the advanced actives penetrate deeply — where they’re able to produce the greatest results.”

More benefits include the ingredient matrixyl 3000, which is claimed to “reduce the visible depth and volume of wrinkles on the face caused by the contraction of muscles, especially on the forehead area and around the eyes” and a “naturally derived shiitake mushroom-based skin tightener that has immediate effects on the look of sagging skin and is formulated to gradually strengthen skin’s connective tissue.”

I used this product daily for about a week. I loved the fresh scent and creamy feel. I did not, however, notice any visible wrinkle or line reduction. Nor did my skin seem more taut. And, more importantly, I do not think SPF 20 is sufficient for daily use. I have read over and over that dermatologists recommend SPF 30 or higher for daily use. Since there are many such products on the market (and several with SPF 40 and higher!) I would not choose this one first. Or, I would use it as a moisturizer and follow up with a facial sunscreen that has a higher SPF. All in all, a good sunscreen, but not the best in my book.

  1. For dry skin on your face check out Apothederm http://apothederm.com/
They have an amazing moisturizing cleanser and moisturizing cream. They work better than anything else I’ve tried.
