I’m always up for a new lip balm, and was so eager to try the recently introduced line from Silly Lips. According to the company founder, Lila Larsen, “This universal lip balm adds serious moisture and shine, with a hint of flavor.” The product is “enriched with shea butter to leave your lips feeling silky and smooth.” And they say it can be used, “alone or with your favorite lip color.”

Before I even got to test the lip balm, I had to take note of the adorable packaging. Instead of cylinders or tiny pots, this packaging resembles a box of matches; is sleek enough to slide into your pocket, or the tiniest little evening bag. Plus, the graphics are adorable — vaguely risqué illustrations of scantily clad beauties that have a distinctly retro vibe. Think naughty pin-up calendars from the 1950’s and you’ll get the idea.

Larsen says that the three flavors were modeled after her closest friends, Tracy, Bekah and Katie, and that they “embody the unique personalities of the different women. Bangin’ Bekah exudes a flirtatious energy and draws a crowd through sweet strawberry lips. Kinky Katie — the ultimate temptress — emits an irresistible pink shine that makes lips stunning and captivating. Tasty Tracy’s hint of peach coconut adds sheen to this exotic beauty whose love of the beach matches her sunny disposition and free spirit.”

Okay, I was pumped. I used all three flavors and I have to say that I saw and tasted virtually no difference between them. Naming the balms after friends and inventing stories about their respective personalities is a cute bit of marketing, but it’s no more than just that, marketing. On the plus side, this is an excellent lip balm: emollient and super effective. Parched lips will sigh with relief when it’s applied. The ingredients skew to the pure and natural: castor seed oil, hydrogenated castor oil, beeswax and shea butter being chief among them. And since there are no sweeteners, you’re not tempted to lick away the benefits.

Silly Lips lip balms retail for $12.50 each. For more info, go to www.sillylips.com
