How much would you spend on your facial moisturizer alone? How about $13,000? We’ve covered some pretty expensive creams in the past here on BeautyStat, but when we read that the Japanese brand Clé de Peau Beauté will be releasing a $13,000 cream, we were floored!

Yahoo news found out that the La Crème will be released this fall on September 21 in Tokyo to mark the Shiseido company’s 30th anniversary. At that price, only a coveted three jars will be sold to those seeking the fountain of youth… in cream form. For those of you who might have to pass on the exorbitant cream, another more affordable one will soon follow suit, so watch out!

“We do not usually make limited editions of our products, but this is to mark a special occasion for the Clé de Peau Beauté,” said brand spokesman Megumi Kinukawa. “We hope it will appeal to our loyal customers and people who are interested in gorgeous brands.”

Each hand-crafted jar will be filled with only 50-grams of product — making it five times more expensive per gram than gold — and will be made up of thirty layers of crystals and three rings of platinum. The jar itself will be a sight to behold, as esteemed French glass-maker specialist Crystal Saint-Louis was the creator of the jar’s overall look.

What better way to emulate the youth you can achieve with this cream than by having the fresh-faced songbird/actress Amanda Seyfried as the face of La Crème. The brand’s website had this to say about their new spokesperson: “As the exciting embodiment of luminous sophistication and natural radiance, Amanda Seyfried captures the very essence of Clé de Peau Beauté. She is pure of heart, vibrantly alive, and brings joy to the lives of others.”

At $13,000, we wondered if the ingredients found in the cream alone justified the price. We asked resident BeautyStat research chemist R. London Griffin what makes the cream worth so much, “4MSK (4-methoxy salicylic acid KCl) is the only ingredient which is unique to La Crème. Arbutin and Rucinol®, which are in other beauty products, work by the same mechanism as 4MSK, so it’s not really too special. Given the multitude of 4MSK providers worldwide, cosmetic companies should have no problem procuring 4MSK, and it should not greatly affect La Crème’s price.”

London went on to admit that the main reason this cream would be sold at such an extravagant price is mostly due to the designer, hand-crafted container. The cream has been available for purchase for over ten years, being sold at Bergdorf’s cosmetic counters for $450 an ounce back in 2001.

Below is a list of the other ingredients found in La Crème:

4MSK– exclusive to Clé de Peau Beauté, a superior brightening ingredient that inhibits melanin activation

Retinol ACE – improves skin’s ability to counteract wrinkles

W-TC Complex – improves epidermal cell metabolism

Cornflower (Centaurea Cyanus) Extract – promotes the production of the protein that is the main component of the basement membrane

Wintergreen (Pyrola Incarnate) Extract – prevents damage to the basement membrane

Chai Hu Extract – is known to increase the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid.

Saxifraga Extract – is known to stabilize free radicals and inhibit the activation of enzymes that cause melanin formation

So, tell us, ladies… What do you think about this $13,000 cream? Have any of you ever indulged yourselves on an expensive beauty product before? Let us know and comment below!
