Topknot

Hair by: Tim Rogers, Living Proof Creative Director

“The spring runways were all about split personalities – architectural, masculine clothing versus more of a loose, bohemian feel. When it came to the hair, knots were huge and you can create this one in 15 minutes or less.”

“This is a tough, masculine take on the traditional ballerina bun. There is something quite rough about it, which I think is a great contrast to some of the more feminine spring fashion.”

Tips/Technique:

“I first washed her hair with Living Proof No Frizz Shampoo ($24.00; 8 oz) and Conditioner ($24.00; 8 oz) and Prime Time Style Extender ($20.00).

– Then, because her hair is quite thick, I added a quarter-sized amount of No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream ($26.00) to give her a smooth, tamed style.

– I blew her out with a basic round brush. I like to create buns in two sections so you don’t get that sagging hair at the back of your neck.

– For the first one, section off the top half of your hair into a ponytail and secure it with an elastic hair tie. Take the bottom half of the hair and make it into a ponytail, twisting once to incorporate it into the first ponytail.

– Secure both ponytails together with another elastic hair tie.

– Tease the ponytail to give it some height and texture, then twist and coil it around the base.

– Secure with bobby pins.

Side Part/Low Ponytail

“French Vogue is really 80s-inspired these days, and they’re giving their girls a very deep side part. It’s a nice change from the center part that we’ve been seeing for so long. A ponytail is really my go-to style – even for the red carpet. You can really make it feel elevated and special with a good hair accessory.”

Tips/Technique:

– “We started with Living Proof Full Shampoo ($10.00; 2 oz) and Conditioner ($10.00; 2 oz), then I added Prime to her damp hair so that her style would last longer. On top of that, I put Full Mousse to give her volume, thickness, and grip.

– I then blew her hair dry using a round brush and gave her a deep side part, which is so current right now. A lot of the designers were doing it for their spring shows.

– To give her hair that great texture, I did a combination of teasing and applying a pea-sized amount of Amp2 Instant Texture Volumizer ($24.00) at her crown to give her more of a lived-in, full look.

– I secured her ponytail with a basic hair elastic, then added on one of these great barrettes that I buy at Colette in Paris.

– At the very end, I teased the bottom of her ponytail some more for some extra volume and pulled out some small tendrils around her face so that it didn’t look to precious and perfect.”

Rock & Roll Waves

“I love when a hairstyle looks like something girls can actually do to themselves. When it comes to hair, the less precious the better.”

“I cut very soft layers down the side of her face – I call them invisible layers because they’re just barely there, but they frame her face really nicely. Bangs with long layers are really in right now, and I’m into a 1960s kind of bang. They’re a little shorter in the middle and long on the sides.”

Tips/Technique:

– “First I washed her hair with Living Proof Full Shampoo and Conditioner, then I added a quarter-sized amount of Prime so that her blowout would last longer and she could get a second day out of it. On top of that, I applied a quarter-sized amount of Full Thickening Cream ($26.00) to give her fullness at the bottom of her hair.

– I then took a blow-dryer and a round brush, starting at the root and twisting the brush as you get toward the end of the hair to give it a subtle curl.

– With a simple twist of the wrist you’re able to get a really beautiful curl without having to use a curling iron – it’s prettier and more natural looking. And it curls the bottom of the hair rather than the top, which I think is so modern right now. I used a round brush to smooth out her bangs, too.”

Short Cuts

Hair by: Chris McMillan, Living Proof Celebrity Hairstylist

“My short hair inspiration is everyone from Twiggy and Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby to Jean Seberg. I’m also always inspired by fashion and I love it when models chop off their hair – they create this whole new trend every time they do it. Just look at Arizona Muse, Linda Evangelista, and Agyness Deyn. There is nothing chicer.”

“When your hair is short, you can stand to wear clothes that are a little more over the top because your hair is so chic and minimal. And you can experiment with hair accessories. I love a good headband or a pretty barrette. My friend Jen Meyer makes these gorgeous hair pins that feel really feminine, elegant, and modern.”

Tips/Technique:

– First, I washed the hair with Living Proof Full Shampoo and Conditioner.

– I then applied Prime Style Extender to wet hair and massaged it evenly through to give her her lasting style, softness and smoothness.

– Starting with the sides of her hair, I used a blow-dryer working with just my fingers, then I switched to a round brush to give her fullness and shape at the crown.

– I rubbed a pea-sized amount of Amp2 through my hands and then applied it throughout her hair to give it shape, volume and a lived-in texture that is very modern.

– At the very end, I slipped on two of Jen Meyer‘s new hair pins – I think using two, rather than one, is a little unexpected.

“Short hair is really easy to care for, but you do need to get it cut every four to six weeks. You don’t need to shampoo as often though – I recommend my clients wash every other day rather than every day.”
