What Causes Cellulite, How To Treat It And What Are The Best Ingredients To Look For In At-home Treatments

As summer approaches and the hemlines get shorter and shorter, most of us ladies begin to feel the looming dread of exposing our legs, in fear of someone catching an unfortunate glimpse of cellulite in an unflattering angle. But, what exactly is cellulite and what are some ways to get rid of it?

According to Dr. Debra Jaliman, who is recognized as one of the top dermatologists in the nation, “Cellulite is fat that has fibrous bands pulling down on the fat which gives the skin a dimpling/orange peel-like appearance.” Cellulite is mostly seen in women because of a hormone uniquely found only in women, which causes the herniation of fat within fibrous connective tissues resulting in the dimpled skin appearance of cellulite.

Dr. David E. Bank, a leading dermatologist based in NY, provides better insight to the other contributing factors, besides gender, which lead to cellulite. According to him, cellulite can be “genetically related, in that it’s due to gender, race, slow metabolism, distribution of fat, and circulatory insufficiency. There are also hormonal factors, such as estrogen levels, degrees of insulin, issues with thyroid hormones, and prolactin cell[s] can contribute to the production process of cellulite production.” He also states that cellulite can form as a result of diet and lifestyle choices and “the unfortunate result of simply aging.”

While both dermatologists agree that, as of now, there is no set procedure to completely get rid of cellulite, there are still several ingredients one can look for in cosmetic products to improve and reduce its appearance. Topical anti-cellulite products can really make a difference in the reduction of cellulite if they contain ingredients such as caffeine, L-carnitine, retinol, collagen, and/or green tea extracts.

Caffeine is great because it has the ability to constrict blood vessels; L-carnitine assists with the transport of fatty acid cells; retinol stimulates the production of collagen, which in turn helps smooth out skin and prevent the invasion of free radicals in the deeper layers of skin tissue; green tea extracts are anti-inflammatory and contain theobromine, which releases the body’s stored fat. Now these are but a few of the many cosmetic ingredients out on the market that can help reduce the appearance of cellulite. Apart from beauty products, the most effective way to beat cellulite is exercise! By adding twenty minutes of cardio and strength training to your daily regimen at least three times a week, studies have shown a dramatic reduction in dimpling after just two months! Dry brushing has also become a popular remedy in reducing “orange peel” skin. Dry brushing consists of exfoliating your body in a completely dry state using a fibrous brush in a circular motion directed towards your heart. Eight Skincare has a line of products, including the Natural Sisal Dry Skin Body Brush ($20.00), targeted towards this anti-cellulite procedure. Check out some of their products here.
