Review: 6 Best Fail-Proof Treatments/Products for Keeping Curly, Kinky, Coily Hair Conditioned & Moisturized In The Winter

Hey, beauties! The weather here on the East Coast has been so rude this winter. I get that the winter is supposed to be cold and all, but these record-low temperatures are uncalled for! With it being this cold out, I’ve had to crank my haircare routine into overdrive to keep my curls happy and hydrated.

Soft Sheen Optimum No-Lye Relaxer: How To Relax Curly, Kinky, Caucasian Hair

Before I share my faves, here’s a bit of back-story on my natural hair journey. I stopped using chemical straighteners on my hair 14-years ago, but it wasn’t until 2010 that I stopped flat-ironing my hair entirely. Prior to 2010, I was still using heat on my hair to get it silky-straight, thus I was also frying my hair so badly that it had no body or shine and was constantly breaking off.

Miss Jessie’s Leave-In Condish: Best Conditioner For Kinky, Curly, Wavy Hair

I cut most of my hair off in 2010 and vowed to start fresh with no heat processing. Since then, I’ve only worn my hair in its natural state and have learned how to manipulate it into different styles with twists, rods or by using the lowest heat setting on my blow dryer.

Curly cuties rejoice! These products will keep your ringlets healthy and happy.

The Best Haircuts For Curly, Textured, Coily Or Kinky Hair Types

Beautiful Textures Tangle Taming Leave-In ConditionerMy natural hair texture is very fine and I have a Z-shaped curl pattern. (Although my hair appears thick, each individual strand is actually very fine. If you have kinky hair like mine, be careful that you don’t confuse your hair density with having coarse hair.) With all those fine strands of hair packed so densely together, you can imagine how tangled my hair can become! The Beautiful Textures Leave-In is my go-to product on wash day and for in-between washes. If your hair is kinky-curly like mine, I can promise that this will help make your hair more manageable and lead to fewer tangles. I also LOVE that it’s only $7 a bottle! #Score

Paul Mitchel Foaming PomadeOh, dear sweet Foaming Pomade! How I love you so! When I cut my hair super-short in 2010 (see a pic here), this is the product my hair stylist used to form my hair into tiny coils. After she would coil my hair while it was damp, I would sit under the dryer for a bit to set the curls. Then, as the days went by, the coils would start to loosen, leaving me with a halo of fluffy ringlets. I loved it!

As my hair grew out, however, I started using the Foaming Pomade to achieve sleek styles such as buns and updos. Let me tell you: THIS gets my hair to lay down nice and smooth much better than any gel, mouse or anything else I’ve ever tried, period! As an added bonus, it does not flake or cake one bit.

Shea Moisture Thickening Moisture Mist & Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing SmoothieI’m grouping these 2 products together because over the years I rarely ever use one without the other. These two products are solely responsible for how I keep my natural hair moisturized on a day-to-day basis. They have a permanent place on my bathroom counter top.

The Moisture Mist is infused with shea oil and aloe vera leaf juice, which my hair loves. The Smoothie is made with shea butter along with coconut, avocado and carrot oil. And on top of that, it smells so amazing! After shampooing, I use these products when my hair is slightly damp to lock in moisture. During the week, I usually add a few pumps of the Moisture Mist with a small dollop of the Smoothie onto small sections of my hair before putting it into large two-strand twists before bedtime. Warning: A little bit of the Smoothie goes a long way. If you overdo it, it can weigh your hair down.

Curl Rehab Moisturizing Hair TreatmentI’ve been using this conditioner for 3 solid years now, and it never lets me down! Similar to the 2 Shea Moisture products above, this treatment also has oils: aloe vera leaf juice and shea butter, which are staples in my haircare regimen.

The first time I used this conditioner I was blown away by how soft my hair felt after I rinsed it out. There is a distinct difference in how silky my hair feels when I use the Curl Rehab versus other conditioners in my stash. To use, I add the product to damp hair after washing. Then, I will sit under my Huetiful Hair Steamer or Hair Therapy Wrap to let the conditioner work its magic. Be advised, this gem is hard to find, so I usually order online by the boxful to make sure I never run out.
