Half Up/Half Down Chic

We got the scoop on how to achieve Jessica Simpson‘s elegant half up/half down wedding style hair from Devin Toth, Senior Stylist and Director of Education at the Ted Gibson Salon.
Step 1: Prep your hair with a light volumizing product such as Kerastase Volumifique and then blow it out with a large round brush.
Step 2: Next, wrap large vertical sections of hair around a large curling iron. When you’re all finished curling, brush the hair away from the face with a boar bristle brush; this process will give the hair a very soft yet flowy texture.
Step 3: Securely section off the hair on the top of the head with a “horseshoe-shaped” section (from your temple, around the bottom of your crown and then to your other temple). Clip that section out of the way to use later.
Step 4: Backcomb the hair on the sides of the head and then gently brush the sides (at the same time) towards the lower part of your crown.
Step 6: Combine the sections, twist them and secure with bobby pins.
Step 7: Finally, take the hair on the top of you head (that you sectioned out before), lightly backcomb the roots and then gently brush it away from the face and over the twist at the lower part of the crown.
Step 8: Add the hair from the top to the twist you’ve already created and secure it into the twist with bobby pins.
TIP: The twist in the back isn’t the important part, especially if it’s covered by a veil. The important aspect of Jessica’s hairstyle is how the front looks sculpted — that’s what makes it look elegant. To ensure the front looks sculpted, at the end, use a strong hold hairspray like Laque Noire, and spritz your boar bristle brush (if you don’t have a boar bristle brush, just use a new tooth brush). Now, ever so gently glide/brush the hair one last time away from your face towards the back or your head. This will make it super-smooth and last all day!
Disheveled Halo Braid
Braids always make a great go-to style when attending a wedding, as you don’t have to worry about it all day and night. Looking sharp with an open neckline or strapless dress, Cutler/Redken Stylist Jenny Balding shows us how to create a Disheveled Halo Braid emulating stars like Scarlett Johansson and Amanda Seyfried.
Step One: Create a middle part and split the hair into two sections.
Step Two: Braid each section starting just behind the hair.
Step Three: Bring one braid over the top and secure with a hair pin behind the ear.
Step Four: Use your hairpin like an anchor and twist it back on itself. This is the perfect way to disguise, and secure, your halo braid.
Step Five: Then secure through the top sections if necessary with a couple of hair pins.
Step Six: Repeat on the other side.
Sleek Center Braid
If you prefer a more quirky finish, a Sleek Center Braid definitely works for a summer wedding, as it allows you to wear your hair down and works with almost any neckline. Follow Jenny Balding’s thorough steps to achieve this edgy, cool look.
Step One: Blow-dry hair very straight by using a smoothing, straightening lotion.
Step Two: Section a mohawk section of 2” width coming into a point at the nape.
Step Three: Use a dry shampoo on this section to create texture and grip to the hair.
Step Four: Reverse braid from the hairline right down to the nape, and secure with a small band.
Step Five: If necessary, finish by using straightening irons to the loose hair to create a sleek, polished feel.
My Pretty Ponytail
Even ponytails can prove to be wedding-chic, as proven recently by Olivia Palermo, who sported a tousled twist on her very own wedding day. To recreate this effortlessly beautiful look, Celeb Hairstylist Mark Hill breaks down this look in 6 easy steps!
Step One: First, take a section of hair and spray with Mark Hill Gorgeous! Work it Girl Shine Protect and Control Spray. Run your fingers through the section to ensure it is evenly distributed. The spray will not only protect your hair from heated appliances up to 235°, it will also give your waves a great hold and gorgeous shine.
Step Two: Then, take a heated wand and wrap the section spirally around the barrel of a large tong or wand. Hold for a few seconds, and then unwind.
Step Three: Immediately coil the wave towards your roots and secure with a pin curl clip. This is a great tip to ensure you get an even wave result throughout all of your hair and to make the waves last longer.
Step Four: Do this through the rest of your hair, remembering the larger the section, the looser the wave. When all of your hair is done, spray over one more time with a light mist of Mark Hill Gorgeous! Work It Girl! Shine, Protect and Control Spray and allow to cool completely before removing the clips.
Step Five: Pull your hair back into a ponytail at your crown – it’s best to use a product to help smooth your hair and add some hold to the waves, such as Mark Hill Viva La Volume Volumising Blow Dry Mousse before pulling it back.
Step Six: Use a pin tail comb to help smooth and keep things neat, and add some Mark Hill Gorgeous! Quick Change Texturising Polish to give your ends that extra texture and va-voom!
