This week, we attended CEW’s Annual Trend Forecasting Event where Mintel Group, Ltd. shared consumer insights about where the beauty industry is headed in the future, followed by a presentation from experts at NPD Group and Nielsen, who provided a review of the beauty industry’s top performers.
Mintel Group, Ltd.: Sarah Jindal, Senior Innovation and Insight Analyst, Beauty and Personal Care, provided actionable insights on the four key consumer beauty trends they expect to disrupt the industry in 2018: natural ingredients, gender fluidity, honesty, and technology.
Nielson:
Jordan Rost, Vice President, Consumer Insights, shared an analysis of major trends impacting the industry – including the
growth of e-commerce, the importance of natural ingredients, and the
need for consumers to identify with brands.
Of the consumer product sectors, beauty
online sales are outpacing the others by 31%.
NPD Group: Larissa Jensen, Executive Director, Beauty Industry Analyst, revealed 2017’s top beauty industry performers, the most successful launches, holiday season best-sellers, top retail channels, social media winners, and Amazon’s overall impact on beauty sales.
Prestige beauty grew by 7% in North America.
Compared to brick and mortar, fine department stores and mass channels,
dot com sales are showing significant growth.
Prestige beauty sales grew to
$18 Billion in 2017 ($17 Billion in 2016).
All beauty categories grew in 2017 – but
skincare outpaced the others, showing 9% growth over the year before.
Facial moisturizers and
Other Face skincare categories drove the growth as well as the launch of new textures.
The top skincare launch was
Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple Pore Extractor Exfoliating Clay Mask.
Other notable skincare launches include
Tarte Ready Set Radiant Skin Mist,
Tatcha Violet-C Radiance Mask,
Lancome Visionnaire Crescendo Progressive Night Peel, and
Shiseido Sport 80 Spectrum SPF 50+ Wetforce.
Clinique, Estee Lauder, Lancome, and Philosophy maintained their top respective positions in 2017, but the newcomer,
La Mer, debuted in the number 5 spot.
La Mer and Kiehl’s were the top performing skincare brands.
The
Urban Decay Naked Heat Eye Shadow Palette was the top performing makeup launch in 2017.
Other notable makeup launches included
bareMinerals BarePRO Performance Wear Liquid Foundation,
Anastasia Beverly Hills Aurora Glow Kit,
Too Faced Natural Love Eye Shadow Palette,
Lancome Monsieur Big Volume Mascara, and the
Tarte Make Believe In Yourself Magic Wands Brush Set.
MAC, Urban Decay, Clinique, and Lancome maintained their top 4 respective positions in 2017, but
Tarte debuts in the number 5 spot.
Tarte, IT Cosmetics, Too Faced Cosmetics, Anastasia Beverly Hills, and Benefit Cosmetics were the top performing makeup brands in 2017.
