Easily the most fun show I’ve been to, Betsey Johnson’s Spring 2010 Fashion Week backstage and show were a scream! 31 models flew in and out in bright bright dresses and huge bows fastened to their hair, while loud music (everything from Lady Gaga to the Black Eyed Peas) played in the background.
Our ears hurt but our eyes didn’t!
Betsey (above) got her own makeup and hair done — she looked just like one of the models in her show.
As you can see, the look was very sultry and enticing. “The theme is Uptown Girl meets Downtown Guy…may be even a One Night Stand,” says a Stila makeup artist. “The look is about being imperfect…the hair is messed up (it’s morning after hair), and the look is very edgy while being smoky and sultry.”
There’s a bit of fallout in the makeup too — a little bit of sparkly glitter smudged on the side of the eyes…and the headpieces are askew. SO Betsey!
The hair was done by Peter Gray and the nails by butter LONDON.
“The light really catches the nails beautifully,” says Nonie Creme of butter LONDON. “We applied a dark first coat of Branwen’s Feather, which is a blackish purple shade, and then layered 1-2 coats on top of that with Rosie Lee or a green Henley Regatta.” Shown below are Branwen’s Feather and Rosie Lee.
“It’s all about a sexy dirty glitter,” says Creme, “and the look is slightly punk. It’s glitter for grown ups.”

Peter Gray, who did the hair, says he wanted to get some crazy volume in the hair and texturize it. “I used braiding on the hair and lots of head pieces.” He also used # 18 Quick Dry Instant Finishing Spray from Redken and a lot of # 23, the forceful 23 super strength finishing spray (“much stronger,” Gray says). “It’s a lot of pink attitude.”
Vivianna, a makeup artist for Stila Cosmetics, says that she used the Stila Black Smudge Pot and the new Celestial Eyeshadows (they’re out next year–see a sliver of them below)’ a mix of lip enamel and Celestial Lip Glace in Jewel to achieve the thick sultry almost goth-like pout.
“The cheeks are nice and clean,” says Vivianna.
