In honor of Mother Earth, who has given us everything from a perfect planet to live on, resources that we’ve exploited, water that we’ve used and resources we’ve failed to renew, we highlight some brands and concept stores that are truly giving back to the world.
Mandarin Oriental Spa New York Relaxation Room
Mandarin Oriental Spa Amethyst Steam Room
Last week, I had the opportunity to experience a once in a lifetime facial at the Mandarin Oriental New York with Amala Skincare products. We’ve written about them before, but the facial was an other world experience. My esthetician, Cheryl Rosen, knew everything about my skin before I even hopped on the table, and everything she put on my skin, from the purifying gel cleanser, moisturizer to my favorite hydrating yogurt mask took away the redness, dehydration and tacky feeling my skin was experiencing.
Our must try? the rejuvenating collagen mask which is a superhero in the anti-aging department. The travel spa treatment kit for face and hands is a must have ($48).
A one stop shop for the true green goddess in you, The Natural Store selects products that are truly environmentally friendly and containing no parabens. The store’s approach is the “triple bottom line” approach that recognizes how personal health is tied to the community’s welfare. You’ll find pet supplies (including probiotics for dogs), biodegradable bags, skin care and body care items, as well as household cleaning products that are free of artificial colors or dyes, mineral oils or petroleum ingredients and harsh chemicals. Check out your favorite brands including Kiss My Face, Weleda, Tom’s of Maine and Physician’s Formula and know you’re getting them from a trusted source.
Amy Smart and Tika Sumpter (middle)
Yesterday, I had the good fortune to meet and interview Amy Smart and Tika Sumpter at an event for The Body Shop’s latest unveil for Earth Day. The brand introduced the first ever 100% biodegradable shower gel range for the eco-conscious consumer, in scents from Apricot & Basil and Fig & Rosemary (there are six scents in all). The gel base is soap-free and non drying, and it smells completely natural. The formulations also contain no sulfates, parabens or colorants.
We interviewed Amy Smart and were psyched to hear how much eco is playing an important role in the actress’ life.
Tika says, “Use the right foundation…and keep it simple, ladies. Mascara, foundation and lipgloss.” Tika loves M.A.C. and Covergirl and says, “you’ve got to match it correactly and after that, it’s money.” She loves Duane Reade, CoverGirl Amazemint Lip gloss and Pantene Sulfate Free shampoo and conditioner for her amazing hair. She also loves her flat iron. She washes her hair only once a week.
As for Amy Smart, she loves brands like The Body Shop, Jason (toothpastes and shower gels) and Jurlique. “Get a water filter and start using reusable water bottle,” Smart says on little steps you can take to be green and environmentally conscious. “If you want to be conscious in some little way…it becomes a domino effect.” As for her beauty idol, she loves the eco-conscious Alicia Silverstone among others.
And we did notice her rockin’ french braids, and she loves to really do simple hairstyles on a daily basis, including a ponytail. She loves volumizer and hair tools — just like us!
Tell us, how are you celebrating Earth Day? Have you taken baby steps in your green routine? Have you recycled? A little goes a long way…
