There was excitement in the air at Gotham Hall in NYC on Sunday night as everyone was excited to find out who would be the 2015 What’s Next Awards winners. There was a frenzy of anticipation. This contest allows students and salon professionals from across North America to showcase their creativity and talent. They are given a chance of a lifetime to win an acclaimed award that is well respected in the industry.
I never covered the event before and was unsure of what to expect, but I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. The talent in the room was the best of the best and the hairstyles are indescribable. They were not only innovative and original, but also fashion forward.
Burlesque goes Broadway: Sebastian Professional’s ReShaper Review
Although the event is for the entries to showcase their models, the audience got an added bonus. A few of the top stylists at Sebastian created styles on stage in minutes right before our eyes. It was very cool to watch this display of their creativity.
The eight stylists competing for the Grand Prize included four from the Professional category and four from the Student category. One winner was picked from each category.
The styles they showcased were looks inspired by Sebastian’s Professional TOTEMIC spring hair collections. The intricacy and detail that went into each style was truly amazing.
The Professional category winner was Oliver Shortall. He won with his “Totem in Motion”. This was the second year in a row that Oliver was picked as a finalist, but his first time winning it all. I had the pleasure of meeting his family and friends before the event and it was great to see their reactions as he was announced as winner.

The winner in the Student Talent Category was Samantha Peters. Her entry was “Tribal Structure”. It was inspiring to see someone without a lot of professional experience create such a sophisticated hair design.
All stylists should enter this contest next year – it is a great event and an amazing experience. Also, if you ever have the chance to attend, I suggest you go. It was truly memorable.
