Oh, how I love a great black eyeliner! Whether it be powder, liquid or pencil, I love one that allows for a rich, intense delivery of color. This new Film Noir Kohl Eye Pencil ($28.00) in Eclipse (Black) from Hourglass is no exception. It seems like you get a whole lot of pencil for the price (see picture and you will certainly understand what I mean), and I love the ease of its application. The color is rich, has depth and will be my new go-to pencil for certain.

What is wonderful about this pencil is it’s safe for both outer and inner lining. I often, for an extra dramatic look as seen when I was dressed as Queen Ravenna, outline both my inner and outer rims in order to give my eyes a rich, intense look. Although this product is in limited distribution this month, it’s set to launch in January 2013 at Barney’s, Bergdorf Goodman, Space NK and Sephora.com.

To me, it was a piece of art in my hands as its shape is so long and thin — it’s a bit surreal looking which makes it stand out. This pencil is said to be able to line, define and shade the eyes in both Eclipse (sampled and pictured) and Espresso (brown). Formulated specifically for lining the inside of the eyelid, it is skin-friendly and glides on with ease. You can also smudge it for a sexy, smoldering look. It’s said to be long-wearing; elegantly elongated and equipped with two caps: one is the regular cap and the other is a sharpener! These products are paraben-, phthalate- and talc-free.

As many of our readers know, I decided to tattoo my non-existent brows last year and rarely ever need to put a pencil or shadow to them. I spoke to the PR people at Hourglass as I saw their slanted Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil ($32.00) and wanted to give it a try, so they sent it to me in Soft Brunette (also available in Blonde and Dark Brunette) to see if it kept the look of my brows to be believable.

I was a bit nervous to put anything over the tats, but I wanted to fill them in a bit as they do fade with time. They are semi-permanent and I wanted a filler to give my eyes more of a “pop.” Please note I was getting ready to look like Queen Ravenna again, hence the heavier makeup in the not-so-great picture of me.

Available in limited distribution this month (in all stores as of January 2013), the pencil helped keep the shape of my brows, so it made for an easy application. The soft waxes in the formula build volume and provide a light hold. My brows looked soft and natural, and certainly did not read as “penciled in.” It’s the unique triangular shape of the pencil that allowed for me to sculpt with either broad strokes as well as fill-in using the pointed tip. I liked the way my brows looked natural once I was done filling them in.

No sharpening is necessary, as it’s an automatic pencil and the three shades allow you to choose your desired color option. You can also layer and apply more pressure for a more dramatic look. The attached brush on the opposing corner allows you to blend out for a softer look (which I did here).
