Last night’s Met Gala was all about old-world glamour (think Game of Thrones meets Old Hollywood), keeping in theme with the Costume Institute’s new Charles James: Beyond Fashion exhibit, which showcases the mid-20th century designer’s intricate gowns. Everyone was dressed to impress, but we couldn’t help but take in all the hair and beauty looks. We saw everything from pale, peachy lips to modernized updos and red nails. Read on to see some of the trends we noticed!
Before we start, let’s just marvel at Lupita Nyong’o once again! Inspired by Lupita’s emerald green gown, Celebrity Makeup Artist Nick Barose gave the Lancôme Ambassadress purple smoky eyes using the Lancôme Color Design Eye Shadow in Miss Sweetheart D; pink-stained cheeks with the Armani Maestro Blush in 300 and bronze-berry lips with Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge Lipcolor in Bordeaux. Barose used a fun mix of modern colors and textures, just like the actress’s gown, for an overall look that channeled a modern-day Josephine Baker.
As for her hair, Celebrity Hairstylist Ted Gibson was inspired not just by Lupita’s beauty, but her Cartier headpiece for the evening:
“Lupita Nyong’o — the most beautiful woman in the world. This woman is so inspiring to me! After seeing her Prada dress and Cartier headpiece, I knew I had to make her hair something special. I love this French roll because it has a regal feel to it.
To make the look modern, I colored her hair in a purple hue to compliment the green feathers and stones in the dress. To achieve this look, I started off with ultimate shine products and rubbed those into her hair. I then added pieces for the French roll, connecting the extensions with gel and hairspray. As always, I finished off the look with holding spray to keep it all in place. Lupita proves that no matter your hair texture, color, or length — hair is art!”
Healthy Skin
Healthy skin is in! Both Rashida Jones and Maggie Gyllenhaal let their skin do all the talking as they walked down the red carpet. Kiehl’s Since 1851 was responsible for their clean, luminous skin, thanks to the brand-new Micro-Blur Skin Perfector. They both also used Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado and Facial Fuel No-Shine Lip Balm to seal in moisture both on the lips and eyes before their makeup application.
Lips were kept natural with a matte or glossy finish. Emma Stone wore both Revlon ColorBurst Balm Stain in Cherish and Chanel Aqua Crayon Lip Color Stick in Rosewood. Charlize Theron rocked Dior by wearing Rouge Dior Lipstick in Swan #263 for a natural appeal. Solange kept her lips looking naturally pale, wearing NARS Cosmetics Satin Lip Pencil in Isola Bella.
Michelle Williams wore muted, soft lips with the help of Laura Mercier Creme Lip Colour in Rose.
Red Nails
Nails were femme and classy in red! Janelle Monae was rocking COVERGIRL Nail Gloss in Ever Reddy on her nails!
Emmy Rossum let butter London take care of her mani, wearing a custom blend of two nail lacquers in Ladybird and Pillar Box Red for a bold, red color. Sally Hansen accented Anne Hathaway’s nails with a red chrome look using Complete Salon Manicure in Ruby Doo and 2 coats of Hard As Nails Nail Color in Unbreakable Heart made this a mani to remember.
Modern Updo
The classic updo goes modern! Nicole Richie’s purple hair went for a ‘90s grunge feel by twisting two ponytails into a bun, protecting her purple strands with Wella Professionals Brilliance Shampoo and Conditioner. Rihanna kept it edgy by letting her topknot burst with loose curls. Sarah Jessica Parker’s bun was kept high and cascaded slightly off the sides of her head. Anna Kendrick opted for a sleeker, more structured version of the iconic Audrey Hepburn updo, sealing the look with Herbal Essences Naked Sheer Mist.
Dark Lips
Dark lips still seem to be holding on well into the summer months. Actress Marion Cotillard wore Hourglass Panoramic Long Wear Lip Liner in Raven, a new shade for summer, which was followed with a mix of Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick in Raven and Muse to create a sensual orange-red shade. Amber Heard wore crimson lips to go with her muted gold dress. And Kirsten Dunst wore NARS Cosmetics Satin Lip Pencil in Luxembourg to go with her intergalactic meets 1920’s look for the evening.
Take it from the Queen Bey herself! Dark lips aren’t going anywhere, especially with such a gorgeous plum shade you can recreate at home using Palladio Herbal Lip Lacquer in Tahiti Plum.
1950’s glam hair! Victoria Beckham dazzled in white but kept it simple with a deep, side part and loose waves sculpted with Pureology Nourishing Nectar Sculpting Gel. Taylor Swift sported a wave-set bob that was achieved with Pureology Root Lift Spray Hair Mousse for lasting body. And Blake Lively looked like a glamorous mermaid with those waves sealed with a mist of Pureology Cuticle Polisher Shine Serum.
