The Look: The Corpse Bride; pretty but creepy
The Haus Alkire, husband and wife designer team, NYFW Fall/Winter 2013 show was all abuzz backstage. Only an hour before showtime, hairstylists and makeup artists were emulating a rather Tim Burton-esque look for the season.
Creative Director for TIGI Heath Grout was excited about creating the “pretty but creepy” look for the show. The hair was meant to look slept-in, with super-flat roots and a severe center part — the ears were then left to poke out from under the hair, creating a ethereal look.
It seems like the low ponytail is here to stay — a Mason Pearson Brush was used to pull the hair all the way down to the back of the head (making sure the hair cuticles were flat), where a ponytail was then twisted and backcombed, creating immense texture. Once the ponytail was twisted into itself, it was secured with a black piece of thread, then folded into a cone shape still situated low on the the head.
Groat explained that hair accessories are going to be huge for the Fall/Winter 2013 season. He said he has never seen so many accessories in the realm of elastics, bands, hats, jewelry, etc. The fur-adorned cone-like hats that the models were going to wear on the runway came low on the back of the head, but the twisted ponytails poked through.
Groat explained that it is easy to get this look at home just by simply using dry shampoo and TIGI Catwalk Session Series True Wax ($11.29). Pull all of your hair to the back, letting it fall naturally. Spray dry shampoo to get a matte, no-shine look (he even advised creating this look on day-old hair) and make sure to let your ears poke through to really get this right-off-the-runway hairstyle.
“Eggshell. Eggshell. Eggshell,” is all I could hear as Fatima Thomas, Senior Artist for M·A·C Cosmetics, told other artists where to apply the satin highlights on the face. Using M·A·C Strobe Cream ($31.00) with their Face And Body Foundation ($27.00), Thomas wanted the skin to look like an eggshell: matte yet with a satin finish.
The only contouring was seen on the inner corners of the eye, up to the inner brow bone. A dark brown shade was used along with a seafoam blue eyeshadow lightly brushed on the lid. No mascara or eyeliner either! It was all about soft lines and blending light colors together seamlessly.
Nude lips were captured with a touch of cream-colored eyeshadow dusted on the lips. Fatima then applied MAC Cremeblend Blush ($21.00) in Uncommon on the lips with her fingers, dabbing in small circles around the lips for a natural finish.
The nails finished off the Corpse Bride look with a couple of coats of Priti Nails Priti Polish ($13.50) in Magic Man Iris, a glossy and dark plum color, which sealed the fall/winter look for sure!
