Review, Before/After Photos: MAC Zoom Waterfast Lash Mascara For Budge-Proof, Long Eyelashes

I’ve never been a fan of waterproof mascara. The formulas are typically dry; I forget to wear them when I need them, and they don’t usually pack the impressive volume and length of regular versions. But, I must admit, I was curious to try M.A.C.’s latest waterproof mascara — mainly because it involved my favorite mascara of all time: Zoom Lash. I’ve been fanatical about
M.A.C. Zoom Lash mascara ever since it launched a few years ago. It’s my Holy Grail makeup item; the one product I can’t live without; my stranded-on-a-desert-island must-have. But would the new waterproof formula compromise its greatness?

M.A.C. Zoom Waterfast Lash ($15.00) is packaged in the same long, matte tube as the original version. It has an identical straight and tapered brush with bushy bristles. The formula isn’t as creamy as the regular Zoom Lash, but I think this is actually a good thing. A fresh tube of standard Zoom Lash is so buttery that it tends to get gloppy. You have to remove the excess product on a napkin or on the mouth of the tube in order to get clean lashes. Zoom Waterfast Lash bypasses this issue with a thicker formula that is still leagues creamier than other water-resistant mascaras. There are no dry or flakey issues here at all.

The formula does set quicker than usual though, so you have to work swiftly if you’re looking to build and layer coats. Still, even with one swipe, lashes look big, bold, and breathtakingly long. It doesn’t sacrifice what I love so much about Zoom Lash at all — the pure drama.

The moisture-resistant aspect is definitely solid. A standard cleanser isn’t enough to completely dissolve this mascara, nor is typical eye makeup remover. I had to tag team my tools in order to get rid of this stuff: facial cleanser first, followed by an eye makeup remover-soaked cotton pad to banish any remnants. It was kind of a pain, actually. But, at least you can rest assured that this mascara is sure to brave both wild elements and wacky emotions.

By and large, M.A.C. Zoom Waterfast Lash has everything I adore about Zoom Lash and more. It might not hit perfection with a quick-setting and virtually bulletproof formula, but I think it’s safe to say M.A.C. has officially changed my tune when it comes to waterproof mascaras overall.
