This product contains Japanese Cedar Bud Extract. Japanese cedar is a giant sacred tree that is known for its fortifying properties. In the most ancient sugi forest in Japan, cedar trees can survive more than 2000 years thanks to its incredible endurance capacities.
The smell of this product is amazing (well, actually they all smell amazing). I love the formula of this. It truly holds and provides nice shine without being crunchy in your hair. I don’t do make updos but I do blow dry my hair and straighten it a lot. On occasion, I curl it. This really adds some great texture to your hair and helps keep down the frizz.
This shampoo is formulated with delicate ingredients that leave hair balanced – with both moisture and volume – without stripping the scalp of its natural oils. The shampoo transforms into a rich foam that effectively draws out the impurities and buildup on the scalp. It leaves your hair soft and shiny with a lightweight finish. It’s perfectly safe to use on color-treated hair and is also paraben and silicone free.
Use this as your daily shampoo or at least once a week as a pre-cleanse treatment before your preferred shampoo and conditioner routine. If you have an oilier scalp, Shu recommends washing and rinsing twice.
This product contains Onsen, which is known in Japan for its purification properties to cleanse and nourish hair. Onsen-Inspired Ferment is drawn from volcanic sources, situated 2000m deep off the California coast, and is renowned for its ancestral benefits on the mind and body.

This gentle oil conditioner softly detangles to give hair immediate shine and radiance. The unique, lightweight translucent gel texture offers ultimate spreadability and absorption for a truly effortless conditioning experience. The lightweight finish makes it perfect for all hair types, including those with oily hair. This is also safe on color-treated hair and is paraben-free. It has the same notes as the Cleansing Oil Shampoo.
The Cleansing Oil Conditioner contains Bergamot Essential Oil, which is produced on the coast of the Ionian Sea. Bergamot Essential Oil is named after the Turkish Princes who carefully extracted it for centuries for its unique soothing and oil balancing properties on the skin. In this oil conditioner, it helps to maintain the delicate oil balance of the hair and scalp.
I used the Cleansing Oil Shampoo and Conditioner in conjunction with each other every other day (the typical routine for me for washing my hair). I found that these products left my hair feeling smooth and soft, as well as left behind the absolutely lovely fragrance. It lingered for days and smells very much like perfume. The products are very lightweight, despite containing oils, and didn’t cause my hair to look greasy at all.
This multi-use hair oil moisturizes and protects hair with intense nutrition. Camellia Oil absorbs rapidly, deep into the hair’s cortex, leaving it soft and silky with high shine. This velvety hair oil rebalances the hair’s moisture level and provides all-day UV protection without weighing down even the finest of hair. It’s formulated for daily use and safe on color-treated hair.

The Camellia Japonica is a tree known for its strength. It can survive for hundreds of years and withstand very low temperatures. Very rich in essential lipids, Camellia Oil is one of the most rapidly absorbed oils. It provides deep nutrition and moisture as well as helps to maintain the lipid balance of the hair fiber, imparting a supple and velvety feel.

This is my favorite product out of the collection. I’ve used it in all of the ways that the Shu website recommends. I really love to use it as a pre-shampoo treatment. I simply apply several pumps to my hair and leave it in for about a half an hour before I wash my hair. Then, while my hair is still damp, I just apply one pump and then style as normal. It truly softens your hair and makes it look super shiny and sleek. My hair is very dry so this product works wonders on it and restores lots of moisture. It doesn’t make my hair look greasy. Even when I only use it as a pre-shampoo treatment, and don’t apply it again before styling, you can still feel the effects of the Essence Absolue.
Overall, while these products are a little more of a splurge, I think they are extremely effective and live up to their claims. I don’t mind spending more on hair products when they actually work. This is the first time I’ve tried any hair products from Shu Uemura and I’m in love. Plus, the packaging is super cute and reminds me of my childhood!
