I’ve always been a fan of products from the fabled pharmacy that is Kiehl’s, so I was very interested to try out the new Rosa Arctica Lightweight Cream ($60.00; I was given a sample). This product has been described as “a new, lightweight version of Kiehl’s best-seller Rosa Arctica Youth Regenerating Cream, featuring the same efficacious rare ‘Resurrection Flower,’ scientifically proven to jolt skin’s cell vitality.”
According to the company, “this rare and regenerating flower is known to survive up to 31 months of dehydration and return to life when proper moisture conditions are restored.” Other ingredients include vitamin D, glycerin, adenosine and white birch. Additionally, the cream was “formulated to significantly improve the appearance of firmness, lines and wrinkles.”
I used the cream nightly for about a week. It has a lovely, fresh botanical scent and went on easily. I have to say that on the first morning, I noticed my face had a bit of that dreaded gumminess; it felt like paste had been applied to my skin. But, on subsequent mornings this did not happen — perhaps my skin needed time to adjust to the new formula? Hard to say. It did leave my skin soft and supple though. As for the claim about improving fine lines and wrinkles, well, I did not notice much difference there. Still, I would still rank this as a solid night care product, especially for the warmer months, when a richer formula might feel too greasy.
Building on the same formula as the Rosa Arctica Lightweight Cream, Kiehl’s recently introduced Rose Arctica Eye Youth Regenerating Eye Balm ($46.00), a product which has the distinction of being “the company’s first eye cream using the ‘Resurrection Flower’ to provide visible rejuvenation and revitalization for the eye area.” According to the literature, this “rich, balm texture is infused with the same rare haberlea rhodopensis, an ingredient named for its unique ability to survive in nature for over two years without water, jolting back to life within hours of proper hydration.”
Kiehl’s promises that it will “revitalize the appearance of skin in the delicate eye area for visibly younger-looking eyes, instantly brightening and deeply hydrating, while over time smoothing crow’s feet and lifting the eye contour area.” Other ingredients include squalene (derived from olives), white birch and lipids, which are a blend of carnauba, cocoa butter and shea butter. I used the eye balm nightly for a week and was immediately smitten with its pale, creamy color and soothing emollient formula. Here was a cream that could make a girl feel like she was being pampered! The skin around my eyes did feel smoother, softer and more hydrated as a result of this use. But did I notice a decrease in puffiness, fine lines or dark circles? Afraid not. However, I like this formula and would keep it in my rotation, especially as the cold months approach.
