Summer weather has finally arrived, and that means adjusting our skincare routine as we head to sandy beaches or chlorinated pools. Spending too much time in the sun? Experiencing some skin concerns like burnt, dry and sensitive skin?
Find out about the best laser, bleaching and shaving treatments to get rid of dark spots, hyperpigmentation —> HERE!
We spoke with Heidi Gilchrist MD, board certified dermatologist and beauty expert, to help us make some skincare routine changes during the summer months. We learn the importance of avoiding over-exfoliating our delicate skin, how to treat sunburns and why it’s important to increase our SPF number when we’re busy having fun in the sun!
How often should you exfoliate your skin during the summer?
HG: Two to three times a week is adequate in the summer. Skin is exposed to sun, salt water and other sensitizers in the summer. Over-exfoliating can lead to irritation and breakouts.
What is the best way to treat sunburns?
HG: You shouldn’t get a sunburn in the first place, of course! But, if you do, aloe vera is an excellent natural remedy. Very red and inflamed areas can be treated with over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone cream as well.

What are other skincare changes should you make for the summer months?
HG: Bump up your SPF! The number on your bottle or tube reflects a lab test performed with a very thick layer of sunscreen to determine that number. Most people only apply about one-half to one-third the amount of sunscreen applied during lab testing.

Also, make sure your sunscreen contains one of the following UVA-blocking ingredients: zinc oxide, Mexoryl or avobenzone.
