And that’s a wrap! Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter ’13 has officially ended on this Valentine’s Day! BeautyStat rounds up some of the best hair looks from shows including Christian Siriano, Tracy Reese, Rebecca Minkoff and more!
Stylists from Aveda, L’Oréal and TRESemmé were just some of the hair mavens who helped bring these creative looks to the runways, from conservative yet edgy chignons, innovative biker-helmet type and faux-fringe updos, to side-swept textured bangs and straight, sleek polished ends.
Read on to see BeautyStat’s very own Evelyn Lugo (our favorite ‘Curl Gurl’ with ‘hair to share’) as she takes us backstage at the Ralph Ricci and Ostwald Helgason shows, getting us a close-up look at how these hair creations were brought to life.
Designer: Zac Posen
The Stylist: John Frieda Global Creative Consultant Luigi Murenu
The Look: A glam, deconstructed chignon
How-To Steps:
1) Before drying, Luxurious Volume Volume Building Mousse was raked through to build texture while still keeping the hair soft and touchable.
2) Hair was pulled back into a chignon at the nape of the neck, with pieces left loose to give the look a messy, modern edge.
3) Each loose piece was carefully crimped, resulting in a mohair-like texture.
4) The look was set in place with Luxurious Volume All-Day Hold Hairspray.

The Look: Chic, faux fringe updo; inspired by the punk and New Wave movements of the 80’s
How-To Steps:
1) Start by applying TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Mousse liberally throughout roots and blow-dry with a Mason Pearson brush, gently pulling the hair back for a flat, clean hairline.

2) Once all hair is dry, spray TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray around hairline. Using a brush, pull hair into a ponytail and secure with an elastic just below the crown.
3) Apply NEW TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Serum throughout ponytail and begin twisting, pulling the twist up towards the hairline and securing with pins as you go. Finally, fasten twist with an elastic, making sure to leave the ends out.

4) Flat-iron ends to create a choppy effect and finish with TRESemmé Smooth & Silky Anti-Frizz Secret Crème.
Designer: Tracy Reese
Stylist: TRESemmé stylist Jeanie Syfu
The Look: A quintessential NY look, the hair combines side-swept texture, polished ends and height at the crown. A clash of black bobby pins arranged at the temple completed the look and complemented the black accents throughout the collection.
Inspiration: A fearless New York girl walking home before dawn after a night out
How-To Steps:
1. Lightly dampen hair and liberally apply TRESemmé Thermal Creations Volumizing Mousse and Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray throughout the roots and lengths of the hair for texture and volume.
2. Flip head upside-down and rough-dry with fingers (pulling at the root with fingers until the hair is 90% dry). Use a Mason Pearson brush and continue drying upside-down by lifting at the roots and smoothing the ends. TIP: Use your Mason Pearson brush to lift the roots but don’t smooth the roots, as this will flatten the texture.
3. Flip hair over when dry and create a “front sweep” by lightly brushing hair from the front of the crown over to one side diagonally.
4. Secure the side-sweep in place by haphazardly pinning a clash of black bobby pins at the temple.
5. Tease the crown of the head for lift. Finish with TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray.
6. Apply NEW TRESemmé Fresh Start Color Care Dry Shampoo for texture and pull out pieces for a wispy/undone soft finish.
Designer: Christian Siriano
Stylist: Aveda Global Creative Director, Antoinette Beenders
The Look: “This collection is inspired by the golden age of Russian Opera and Saint Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre,” said Beenders. “From the front, the look has a lovely roundness. The braids at the back evoke refinement and glamour, reminiscent of a Russian girl dressed for an evening at the opera. I’m thrilled with how it all turned out.”
1) Prep hair with Aveda Pure Abundance™ Style Prep™ ($24.00) to give hair some texture and grit. Blow-dry hair straight.
2) Create a clean center part from forehead to nape using a tail comb.
3) Make an inverted fishtail braid on each side of the head, beginning at the crown and working to the back of the ear. Secure the end of each braid with an elastic band.
4) Tame flyaways with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray ($24.00).
5) Add some fullness by gently massaging braids.
6) Fold the braids over one another across the back of the head, just above the nape, in a crisscross fashion. Tuck ends under and secure with bobby pins.
7) Finish with a misting of Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray.

Overall Look: Straight and sleek with polished ends
Hair Inspiration: Inspired by Neil Armstrong’s trip to space, Rebecca Minkoff’s collection featured strong silhouettes, offset with soft fluid fabrics in cosmic prints.

How-To Steps:
1) Start by applying TRESemmé Thermal Creations Volumizing Mousse throughout the roots and mid–lengths and TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Heat Protection Shine Spray to the ends.
2) Blow-dry with a round brush, lifting at the roots and smoothing through the ends.
3) Starting at the nape of the neck, liberally spray 1-2” sections of hair with TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray before straightening with a flat-iron. Continue flat-ironing hair in sections, working up the head to the temples.

4) Create a middle part with a tail comb and take a thin, vertical section of hair, parallel to each side of your part, and lightly tease the hair for volume.
5) Gently brush through the ends and finish with TRESemmé Smooth & Silky No Frizz Shine Spray.
Designer: Timo Weiland
Stylist: L’Oréal Professionnel Lead Stylist, Joseph DiMaggio
The Look: The hairstyle emphasized the regality of the collection, with center parts that flowed into dramatic s-shaped waves. “A raw yet effortless textured wave matched the sophisticated tailoring,” said L’Oréal Professionnel Lead Stylist, Joseph DiMaggio.
How-To Steps:
1) To create the look, DiMaggio shared a Fashion Week insider’s secret of mixing a bottle of L’Oréal Professionnel Volume Expand Leave-In Spray ($24.00/4.3 fl. oz.) with a generous dusting of NEW L’Oréal Professionnel True Grip Texturizing Powder ($15.00/.25 oz.). This cocktail, sprayed generously from roots to ends built extreme volume and texture with a matte finish.
2) Hair was then braided into three sections and set into a bun. To enhance the voluminous waves after removing from the bun, DiMaggio pressed a flat-iron over one-inch sections into cascading “S” shapes.
3) Hair was then flipped over as more True Grip was shaken through strands from mid-shaft to the ends and finger-tousled for extreme volume.

How-To Steps:
1) Start by applying TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Blow Dry Lotion throughout the roots and mid–lengths and TRESemmé Platinum Strength Strengthening Heat Protect Spray to the ends.
2) Blow-dry with a Mason Pearson brush for a straight finish.
3) Create a part down the center and then section hair in two parts, separating across the back of the head from ear to ear.

4) Gently tease the underneath section and along the horizontal line from ear-to-ear.
5) Loosely pull hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck, letting hair fall out around the face.
6) Secure with an elastic and finish with a ribbon.
Designer: Kimberly Ovitz
Stylist: Aveda Global Creative Director, Antoinette Beenders
The Look: “I wanted to create a look that complemented the clothes – like a shield of armor or an armadillo’s shell. The texture is smooth, and finish is shiny, but there is a veil of protection. Think of a 1920’s wave in a futuristic interpretation, just touched with danger.”
How-To Steps:
1) Make a center part, creating two sections on each side of the head.
2) Drench the hair with Aveda Phomollient™ Styling Foam ($17.00) from roots to mid-length and with a Mason Pearson comb each side up into a high ponytail, with one pony nearer to the forehead, and the other behind the ear.
3) Use about an arm’s length of millinery elastic to anchor each of the ponytails in place. This elastic grabs the hair so you don’t have to worry about slippage.
4) Once tied taut, wrap the loose ends of the elastic in a criss-cross fashion around the ponytail, working from the base to the ends, effectively “corseting” the hair.
5) Pull the hair gently from in between the elastic cord to create S-shaped waves. Then, smooth out flyaways with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray ($26.00).
6) Overlay the ponytails on top of the head, directing the ponytail that sits nearer to the face down the side of the head so that it snakes along the hairline. Then secure with bobby pins and U-pins. If the hair is long enough, loop underneath the ear.
7) Direct the other ponytail that sits further back on the head forward along the parietal ridge, which is about an inch above the ear, securing with pins. Again, allow the hair to snake along the hairline above the forehead, tucking the ends under the first ponytail. Together the ponytails should converge to create a wavy S-shaped form.
8) Finish with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray.

The Look: A low-swept ponytail; sleek or messy, hung low at the nape of the neck
Designer: Ralph Rucci
