We know which makeup brushes to use to achieve certain looks. A fluffy brush for blending, a dense brush for stippling on foundation… but have you ever taken into consideration if you’re using the right brush for your hair? BeautyStat went to Twitter to ask our beauties: How Many Brushes Do You Own? And out of those who answered, the average #bstat beauty owns about 7 brushes! Some said they don’t even know how to use most of them, while those with curly hair confessed to using none at all!

So, the man definitely knows a thing or two about his brushes… and can’t stop raving about Olivia Garden. Like, did you know fine hair should use a vented boar brush? And curly haired girls most definitely should not go brush-less. Read on to find out which brush is perfect for your hair type!
Normal to Thick Hair
Square Thermal Brush: Using a unique square shape, you’ll be able to create waves and flips on short/medium hair, and volume and smoothing options on medium to long hair.
Round Thermal Brushes: The large holes are great for airflow and the ceramic-coated barrel dries hair faster. There is a useful retractable sectioning pick found at the bottom of the brushes!
– To add volume, flips and soft curls, use the brushes with the medium to large diameters on medium to long hair.
– To add curls, waves and volume, use small to medium diameters on short to medium hair.
Vent Soft Tip: The ball-point tips are gentle on scalp and hair. The lightweight brush has vented brushes for quicker drying time. It’s ideal to use for daily brushing and men styling.
Curly to Wavy Hair
Oval Ionic & Boar: The curved side easily grabs hair sections for limitless volume; the large, flat side straightens hair. The Ionic bristles massage and stimulate the scalp for medium to long hair.
Round Iconic & Boar: Short and medium length hair benefit with the small to medium diameter brushes to add volume and straighten. Medium and long lengths will achieve ultimate straightening power using the large diameter bristles that will tame flyaways as well.
Curly Hair
Round Boar: The vented brushes dries hair quickly; boar bristles distribute the hair’s natural oils for shiny results. Boar bristles also tame flyaways and are excellent tension control for straightening.
– To add volume to curly hair, use small to medium diameters on short to medium hair.
– To straighten curly hair, use large diameters for medium to long hair.
Fine Hair
Round Soft Tip: Perfect for styling on short to medium lengths with fine hair. This is a good alternative to thermal or boar bristles.
Vent Boar: Ideal to use for daily brushing and touch-ups throughout the day.
Styler: The heat resistant ionic rubber pads are great for styling the hair and shaping. The semi-circular pad and ball-point tips are gentle on hair and scalp.
Vent Paddle: Blow-dry and style medium to long lengths with the special curve shape that hugs the scalp for greater comfort and more natural results.
All Hair Types
Cushion Paddle: Great for gathering hair when doing up-dos and for daily brushing, the Ionic bristles penetrate all the way to the scalp.
Ionic & Boar Paddle: These are perfect for hair extensions, as the boar bristles eliminate frizz and flyaways.
Massage Paddle: This eco-friendly bamboo brush detangles and provides a soothing scalp massage when used. A scalp massage helps stimulate hair growth and reduces hair loss with daily brushing. A healthy scalp = healthy hair!
Detangling Paddle: Using Special Memory Flex bristles, this brush comes in two forms meant to be used on wet hair and/or dry hair. The epoxy ball-point tips are gentle on the scalp, but the Seamless Tension-Flex bristles of scattered lengths smooth and detangle with ease. The special ergonomic shape of the Divine makes the brush an extension of your hand — perfect for nasty knots.
