When it comes to lip color, I will choose a flat 1950’s red over the latest plumping gloss any day. The best thing about rocking a retro lip in 2014 (besides finally being on-trend) is that matte formulas have gotten a million times better since Betty Draper’s day. We are living in the age of electric cars and blueberry Red Bull, and it’s totally possible to find cream lipsticks that don’t make your mouth feel or look like Desert Storm.

Lorac Alter Ego Lipsticks are one such miracle. These new lippies pack highly pigmented color with an opaque, matte finish. You get complete coverage with one swipe, even with lighter shades like Goddess, a true mauve that looks a bit strange in the tube but is simply gorgeous on lips and my favorite of the shades I tried. Matte lipsticks can be drying, but the vanilla-scented formula feels smooth and blends easily if you want to make a custom color. The packing is also current, so you can feel nice and modern whipping out the reflective silver bullets.

I wore Show Girl, a nearly neon watermelon, to an outdoor concert. The color stayed bright and true all night, and I have proof! At the end of the third band’s hour-long set, a girl stopped me mid-shimmy to ask what shade I was wearing. Full disclosure: I touched up after eating and drinking, but that is still some serious staying power!

As with any matte formula, a little prep work goes a long way to ensure your color looks smooth and doesn’t chap or flake. The Alter Ego Lipsticks are infused with acai berry, pomegranate, grape seed extract, and vitamins C and E, but it’s still a full coverage lipstick and needs some help if you want pillowy lips after hours of wear. Prep lips with a scrub or washcloth before you apply your makeup, and tap on a little lip balm with your finger before you apply and before any touch ups. Flaking lips are the opposite of polished.
