Good news, ladies! Spring/Summer 2013 makeup looks are all about enhancing your features — not trying to look like someone else. Long gone are the days of contoured faces with harsh lines and prescribed beauty. Beauty is diversity.
Lyne Desnoyers, Executive Director of Make Up Artistry, and Gordon Espinet, Vice President Global Artist Training/Development from M·A·C are actual makeup artists that work behind the scenes at all the fashion shows.
They spoke at FIT on April 22nd about Spring/Summer 2013 cosmetic trends. These trends are determined through observations of mood and energy backstage at fashion shows. That gives way to four key trends that came out of the shows!
SIG-NATURE Model Looks
These trends are SIG-NATURE — a trend that talks about enhancing skin. Skin should look like skin. This is possible because cosmetic formulation technology has advanced so much – it’s possible to wear makeup without looking like you are. Brows play an important role in his trend. Brows are fuller and straighter this season, almost masculine because of their boldness.
NU-ANCE Model Looks
NU-ANCE — a trend that is an impressionistic approach to application; no harsh lines, just diffused color. Also exploring the idea of applying color on unexpected areas of the eye, for example: Apply color below the brow instead of on the lid.
SCI-CHEDELIC Model Looks
SCI-CHEDELIC — a trend that reinvents the use of color with strong graphic shapes on the eye; sometimes with bold color but never garish or distasteful.
PUR-ITAN Model Looks
PUR-ITAN — a trend that rethinks the bronzer’s role. Use bronzer instead of blush to create depth on the eye by layering. Create a look of humidity for a modern look.
During the presentation, Lyne created the PUR-ITAN trend layering beautiful browns around the model’s eye, while Gordon re-created the SCI-CHEDELIC trend using a vibrant green shadow on eyes.
Because the formulations are so refined, you can build the color without looking chalky. He applied M·A·C Lipstick ($15.00) in Lady Danger — a vibrant red. There was a strong emphasis on the model’s skin, perfecting the skin using BB creams and concealer to ensure that the shadows were correct.
“Makeup is not something that you hide behind or something that’s going to turn back the clock. It’s an art form – and it’s my job to help our teams express themselves, educate them to use the right tools, products and learn how to experiment.” — Gordon Espinet
I was lucky enough to speak with both Gordon and Lyne after the presentation. In stores now is the Baking Beauties Collection. They told me this collection really speaks to the NU-UANCE and PURI-TAN trends.
