We’ve seen a lot of health crazes surface through the years, whether it’s a trendy juice cleanse or fermented Kombucha tea diet. So when we heard about the latest oil pulling craze, we just had to figure out what exactly this was all about.
Promising to improve overall health by just swirling around coconut oil in your mouth, we’ve consulted Dr. Jessica Emery of the Sugar Fix Dental Loft in Chicago to give us the scoop on this brow-raising trend.

Popular with health enthusiasts and bloggers alike, oil pulling has become somewhat of an overnight sensation, as it has been lauded to cure anything from indigestion and insomnia. So, how exactly does this head-scratching process work?
“Oil pulling is a process where one takes 2-3 teaspoons of oil (unrefined coconut oil recommended) and you push and pull it in your mouth for 15-20 minutes. This is the minimum time to pull for maximum outcome. It is then spit out into a trash can and not into the sink. Saliva should emulsify the oil and it should turn milky white.” — Dr. Jessica Emery
And what about those so-called benefits? According to the Huffington Post, with continued use, users can see anything from clearer skin and whiter teeth. However, Dr. Emery explains that some note oil pulling for its anti-arthritic properties.
“People say their breath is better, teeth are whiter and that they have less gingivitis. Others also say they have seen it help with arthritis, migraine headaches and asthma among others.”
Perfectly safe to the human body, Emery suggests that users should be consistent and patient with the pulling, as each result depends on that individual’s body.
“Some people state immediate results and others say it takes days to weeks. It really depends on how compromised your immune system is. It’s incredibly powerful and extremely safe, as long as not swallowed.”
