With the Hunger Games hitting theaters this month, we were able to get some sneak peeks at the cosmetics used on set. If you haven’t noticed already in the trailer, there are some distinct looks that are sure to catch your attention; whether it be Katniss’ smooth, perfectly contoured complexion or Effie’s bright eyes and powdered white face applied with Elizabethan precision, these looks are going to have us makeup mavens here at BeautyStat guessing which products were used.
Make Up For Ever was the brand of choice used on set — understandably so, what for the line’s range of color and long-wearing formulas. Special effects makeup artist Ve Neill — best known for her work on movies such as Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, and, most recently, a judge on the Syfy reality show Face Off — was head of the makeup department for the film and was able to tell us some of the key items she used to capture these looks.
Cinna (played by Lenny Kravitz)
As Katniss Everdeen’s stylist for her Hunger Games campaigns, the man has to look the part. For the film, Cinna’s look was less obvious in his fashion-forward demeanor. His upper lash line was outlined with Make Up For Ever’s Metal Powder #1 (used as an eyeliner) giving him a subtle edge.

Although Katniss spends a majority of the film running and fighting for her life, with little time to worry about a full face of makeup, Ve Neill used an array of Make Up For Ever’s HD Invisible Cover Foundation ($40.00) shades — giving her skin tone different color effects throughout the film. Neill also used Make Up For Ever’s HD Microfinish Blush in #9 as a highlighter for her cheeks, as seen during her interview scene with Caesar Flickerman.
Effie (played by Elizabeth Banks)

As the disturbing hostess with the mostess, Effie’s look is just as peculiar as she is. Usually donning bright colors of eyeshadow and doll-like applied lipstick, her look is something to take notice of. Neill knew she had a lot of colors to keep vibrant and long-lasting, so most of her makeup was sealed with Make Up For Ever’s Eye Seal ($21.00), mixing it with pigments to make sure they were waterproof during shooting.
