File this under weird news: Johnny Weir for M.A.C.’s holiday 2011 campaign.
While we’re not disputing the Olympic ice skater’s schoolboy charms and flamboyant display of technique, it does seem a bit odd for M.A.C. to tap into a male face for the holiday season. Not that they haven’t done this before: both Elton John and RuPaul have been faces of M.A.C. previously but Elton John was for the M.A.C. AIDS Fund and RuPaul was the brand’s first drag queen supermodel.
But I think part of why this collaboration could be very interesting is the packaging itself: known for his flamboyant costumes, Johnny Weir’s outfits and his complete precision and grace. But what we’re wondering is how the brand is going to target women with Weir as a spokesperson for a holiday collection. Weir is a three-time U.S. National Champion (2004–2006), the 2008 Worlds bronze medalist, a two-time Grand Prix Final bronze medalist, and the 2001 World Junior Champion.
Last year’s holiday collection from M.A.C., A Tartan Tale, was also another bold leap out of the box thinking for the brand, introducing plaid when people are typically thinking tinsel, frost and cute angels on a tree. This year, with the Cindy Sherman collection, M.A.C. has already shown us it is going completely left field, and now Weir will only complete this weird year we refer to as 2011.
It should be interesting to see what M.A.C. and Johnny Weir have in store. There’s no doubt in my mind that they’ll take home the gold, no matter what.
What do you think about Johnny Weir for M.A.C.? Like it? Not so much?
