Review, Before/After Photos: Aveda Pure Abundance Style-Prep Hair Spray -- Provides Weightless Volume And Hydration

When half of your body weight consists of just your hair, the words “volume” and “weightless” are music to your ears. My hair, while not unmanageable, poses a challenge for me by its sheer abundance. Though it is thick and healthy, it doesn’t take well to heavy products. So, when Aveda sent me a bottle of their new Pure Abundance Style-Prep Spray, ($24.00) I was eager to see if it was up for the challenge.

Aveda strives to connect beauty, the environment and well-being — infusing this mantra into all of their products. It’s a great company to stand by because they “continually strive to increase the use of naturally derived ingredients,” where 50% of the molecule comes from a plant, non-petroleum mineral, or other natural source (like water), and now more than 90% of their essential oils and 89% of their raw herbal ingredients are certified organic. The style-prep spray is part of the Pure Abundance Collection, which is meant to boost fine hair.

The spray “thickens strands with a botanical blend of passion fruit, rice bran, açaí oil, organic aloe and acacia gum.” Aveda promises that the product will nourish hair, while providing weightless body, and boost the volume of fine hair. It can be sprayed liberally to damp hair before styling, or used to revamp dry, limp locks on non-shampoo days. After my usual shampoo and conditioner, I towel dried; made sure to shake the bottle (as the product instructs) and liberally sprayed my hair from roots to ends. The smell is very earthy and floral; the liquid doesn’t leave your hands at all sticky. I then combed
through, scrunched, blew it dry and added a bit of hairspray for hold.

After one application, I was hooked! I absolutely fell in love with this product. My hair looked fuller, and the roots were expertly uplifted. It did not weigh my hair down, nor did it cause a lot of product build-up. It was then I realized that for hair that is softer rather than stiff, with thinner follicles, sprays are way lighter in weight than gels or mousses — and they can be applied from roots to ends without causing the roots to fall flat.

The next day I revamped my locks by applying more of the products to my day-old dry hair. Again, I was thrilled with the results. Some would say “dirtier” hair is better for styling, and in this case, perhaps the product had a better grip on my hair. It’s always a challenge to reapply a product with the fear it might make your hair look dirty. The style-prep spray did no such thing: the volume was reactivated and my hair still looked clean and fresh.

All in all, though on the pricier side, I was extremely happy with this styling spray. It delivers results that last, and even though the bottle is only 3.4 fl oz, the spray itself is concentrated, so not too much of the product needs to be applied. It is great for styling, and touch-ups through out the day. It keeps hair hydrated, smooth, and weightless. High-five, Aveda! You get an A+!
