The notion of coating my lips with shimmer gloss takes me right back to junior high, but then, Bobbi Brown’s new High Shimmer Lip Gloss ($23 at www. sephora.com) isn’t a teeny-bopper shimmer.
The gloss itself, shown swatched below in Pink Tulle, shines with minute pearlized particles of glimmer, not tacky glitter. And mark our works, this is not just something left to the 13-and-under crowd. This particular incarnation has vitamins C and E to help ward off chapped lips, which is always a welcome benefit to a lip topper.
I passed it among some girlfriends to get their take on it. One lamented the lack of actual solid pigment, and as you can see from the swatch, Pink Tulle is very transparent. Another countered that sometimes, you don’t want an overwhelming lip color, and the shine draws just enough attention to the lips without an in-you-face pop of pigment. I personally have been layering the gloss over berry and red lipstains. I think the takeaway from this product is its versatility. Alone or in a duo, it always looks pretty. It’s a safe way to play with shimmer without venturing into disco territory, or even worse, regressing to junior high.
Bobbi’s new formulation uses a special mix of pearls in a clear base, and the idea is to create a discrete shimmer that’s also emollient and good for your lips. She tested over 50 applicators to really find “the one.” Choose from 15 shades and add them to your collection for $22 each.
