October is a busy month dedicated to calling awareness to a number of causes (including Breast Cancer and Bullying Prevention). But, did you know that October is also National Eczema Awareness Month.
I was kindly invited to the Eucerin Relief event last week, showcasing their two latest products: Eucerin Eczema Relief Instant Therapy and Eucerin Eczema Relief Body Creme. These two products together can help relieve the pain, itching and irritation associated with eczema.
During the evening, we were welcomed with a presentation by the company’s head chemists, and had the chance to talk with dermatologist Dr. Jody A. Levine, MD to answer all of our eczema-related questions.
About 30 million people (from babies to adults) suffer from eczema, and only 80% of consumers self-diagnose. That means a lot of people are unaware of the difference between dry skin and eczema. I sat down with Dr. Levine and asked her what the main difference is:
“Eczema is chronic and relapses. You treat it and it comes back. People with eczema who use regular moisturizer, it just doesn’t work for them. The skin is extremely itchy.”
A lot of people become confused when they hear the term eczema, not knowing exactly what the effects entail. It is a skin problem that can hold many different forms, symptoms and cases:
“Eczema is the umbrella term for sensitive skin. There is atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis that you get from jewelry and fragrance. There are many types of eczema.”
The data presented at the event talked about the number of infants who suffer from eczema. These two new creams are formulated without steroids, making it safe and ideal for even the most sensitive and delicate skin:
“30% of babies get eczema and only 10% of adults have it,” said Dr. Levine. “When babies get eczema around the mouth that is a form of contact dermatitis, a reaction from their saliva causing irritation. And they can also get irritation from green or orange foods.”
I also asked why eczema is so prevalent in babies, and if it had something to do with their undeveloped skin:
“A baby’s skin barrier function is different and not as strong as adults…,” explained Dr. Levine. “…which causes them to be more susceptible to getting eczema.”
