Celebrity hairstylist, owner and creative director of Wonderland Beauty Parlor, Michael Angelo gives us the scoop on how to change our hair color by going from light to dark with a few simple tips! Read on to find out how Michael transformed model/actress Brooklyn Decker from a blonde bombshell to a ‘Sweet Tea’-inspired brunette!
When we change our hair color from light to dark, or vice versa, there’s often an urge to go to extremes. I think that what makes this transformation for Brooklyn Decker successful is its subtlety. I added a clear formula to her ends so that we could retain tons of dimension, and didn’t go much darker at the root than Brooklyn’s natural color. This way, her color still felt connected to her — not too wiggy or dyed.

Much like at the paint store, my rule of thumb is to go a shade more conservative than your gut tells you. You can always go darker, but once things get too dark it could spell trouble… especially if the hair was already treated before darkening. Keep this in mind: blue, green and honey eyes all benefit from warm colors; cold, dark or gray eyes look best against cool-toned colors.

I took Brooklyn from blonde to brunette about an hour before she hit the red carpet for Gods Love We Deliver Heart Awards celebration. I am so glad I didn’t know how photographed and publicized her new hair look would be with NO time for tweaks. Thankfully, I nailed it on the first try.
She’s been traveling so much and her home is in Austin, so it’s been hard for me to keep her blonde. I really had her super light for a minute — which looked amazing — but it’s really high maintenance. She’s done the ‘blonde bombshell’ thing for a while now, and I think she was ready for a change. The shade was inspired by Sweet Tea (she’s a Southern girl) and Bambi.
If you’re doing this at home, steer clear of permanent colors — they can be really difficult to get rid of. Try using semi-permanent colors and glosses. The regrowth will be much easier and it will feel great when you refresh it!
